The females give birth on land to dozens of toadlets, each measuring just a few millimeters long.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhw899og00003b6ngvrzyioc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Live birth, or skipping the egg-laying and larva stage, is extremely rare in amphibians. Among more than 4,000 species of frogs and toads, fewer than 1% are viviparous, or bear live young. This strategy may have evolved as an adaptation in habitats lacking easy access to water where frogs and toads typically lay their eggs, the study authors reported.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhw8eoz1000d3b6n5s7jcmmf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cDescribing these new species that give birth to live young is fascinating and helps us understand the evolutionary flexibility of amphibians, one of the most diverse and ecologically sensitive groups of vertebrates,\u201d said Dr. Diego Jos\u00e9 Santana, curator of amphibians and a conservation ecologist at Chicago\u2019s Field Museum of Natural History. He was not involved in the new research.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhw9edy800183b6nvmavm4jk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The three varieties of tree toad from Tanzania were previously classified as one species: Nectophrynoides viviparus. However, when scientists analyzed the physical traits and genetic data of hundreds of museum specimens, along with vocal recordings of toads in their habitats, they determined that the three types of toad were separate species in the Nectophrynoides genus.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwb4g2w001f3b6nzzzrwf9f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            These newly described species provide researchers with a clearer picture of the diversity in tree toads that bear live young and could help to conserve them. Some wild populations in several Nectophrynoides species are declining, and species with smaller ranges are especially vulnerable to disruptions from deforestation and the climate crisis, according to the study.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwbbs0v001k3b6ngysrdw3k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cFurther surveys are needed to fully understand the distribution, ecology, and possible population trends in these areas to inform future conservation strategies,\u201d the authors wrote.\n    <\/p>\n<p>        Voices, toes and glands of tree toads<\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/nectophrynoides-viviparus-credit-michele-menegon-1.jpg\" alt=\"Coloration and patterning are highly variable in the previously unknown species Nectophrynoides uhehe.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1331\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwbfzvx001u3b6n1tklrp1i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Toads that reproduce in water lay an impressive number of eggs \u2014 in some cases about 20,000 in a single clutch.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwbfzvx001v3b6nl771pxf0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThey can do that every couple of weeks,\u201d said Dr. Mark D. Scherz, lead author of the study published November 6 in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/vertebrate-zoology.arphahub.com\/article\/167008\/element\/7\/0\/Nectophrynoides\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Vertebrate Zoology<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwbcle5001n3b6na6jmnhpe@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThey lay those eggs and they develop into teeny, tiny tadpoles, of which only a fraction ever make it out of the pond,\u201d Scherz, curator of herpetology at the Natural History Museum of Denmark and an associate professor of vertebrate zoology at the University of Copenhagen, told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwijjun00073b6ni9gum52i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Live birth, in which the eggs are fertilized internally, by comparison, yields toad broods that are significantly smaller: around 40 to 60 toadlets. \u201cThe maximum we\u2019ve ever recorded was, I believe, over 160 fully developed toadlets inside one individual,\u201d he added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhw8erfu000g3b6n181ypvgk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s the larger and more developed young that may have an advantage when they enter the world, whether hatched from eggs or born alive, Scherz noted.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwbg7my001z3b6nk4xk8lev@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In 1905, German herpetologist Gustav Tornier found and described the first viviparous toad species, N. viviparus, in Tanzania. They measure no more than 1.5 inches (37 millimeters) long, have slender fingers with rounded discs at the tips, and glandular masses (sometimes referred to as \u201cwarts\u201d) on their limbs. The toads come in a variety of hues, including white, pale gray, buttery yellow, caramel brown, earthy red or black.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwbrdjh00223b6nt5h4ve94@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Scientists have since identified more than a dozen Nectophrynoides species that bear live young. N. viviparus is the most widespread species in the genus and the only one found in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania as well as the country\u2019s Eastern Arc Mountains, where all other Nectophrynoides species live.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwbrkss00253b6nlrsiofmv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But when animal populations are divided by great distances or geographic barriers \u2014 which is the case in many of the forest habitats where Nectophrynoides toads live \u2014 new species can emerge. Scientists previously found genetic variations between Tanzanian N. viviparus populations in the Southern Highlands and Eastern Arc Mountains. By 2016, researchers suggested that the population of N. viviparus toads outside of the Southern Highlands could, in fact, include different species.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwbx6jk00283b6n3khb5b5f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For the new study, the scientists reviewed 257 specimens \u2014 some more than 100 years old \u2014 from five museum collections in Europe, examining toads\u2019 physical traits and extracting genetic data. The research team also listened to recordings of the toads\u2019 calls, which can vary between species in audio frequency, duration, and the number and timing of acoustic \u201cpulses.\u201d (One tool for identifying such vocalizations, developed by another team of scientists in 2021, is called the repeat interval\u2010based bioacoustic identification tool, or RIBBIT.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwbywwp002b3b6npbf1r328@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Based on the toads\u2019 vocalizations, their DNA, and subtle variations in body sizes and shapes of their toes and leg bumps, researchers identified three previously unknown Nectophrynoides species, naming them N. luhomeroensis, N. uhehe and N. saliensis. Some of the female specimens contained \u201clarge yolky eggs\u201d that would nourish their young internally, the study authors wrote. Partially developed embryos inside other females confirmed that these species bore living toadlets.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwc052u002e3b6nvzzepxgk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In addition to separating the outliers that were formerly classified as N. viviparus, the researchers also revisited the oldest N. viviparus specimens to confirm their identity and clarify what defines the species.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwc0z5e002j3b6nzszvhues@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere\u2019s no question that this is now correctly assigned,\u201d Scherz said. \u201cIt\u2019s really a game changer.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwc0z5e002k3b6njerv0rwk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            With nearly all the data coming from museum specimens, this work \u201cunderscores the importance of continued investment in taxonomy and natural history collections,\u201d Santana told CNN in an email. \u201cWorking at the Field Museum, which holds specimens from all over the world, I\u2019m constantly reminded that many new species are still waiting to be recognized.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/nectophrynoides-viviparus-habitat-credit-michele-menegon.jpg\" alt=\"Nectophrynoides viviparus is found in a range of habitats in Tanzania.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1331\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwc25ko002q3b6nvmmv4pgz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            More work needs to be done untangling questionable specimens from existing species of Nectophrynoides, according to Scherz.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwc22eq002n3b6n738plj9n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Identifying the three species that are new to science \u201cis a small part of the big puzzle of this genus,\u201d he said. For example, the species N. tornieri, described in 1906, is now known to be a species complex, a group containing individuals that are genetically very similar but potentially different enough to be considered separate species.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwc2yo8002t3b6n5wt1etcv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But Tanzanian tree toads face more pressing concerns than which goes where in the Nectophrynoides family tree. Their forest homes are increasingly threatened by human activities, political instability and the climate crisis. One species \u2014 N. asperginis, or the <a href=\"https:\/\/royalsocietypublishing.org\/doi\/10.1098\/rspb.2024.1157\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Kihansi spray toad<\/a> \u2014 is already extinct in the wild. N. poyntoni, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucnredlist.org\/species\/54842\/13323022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Poynton\u2019s forest toad<\/a>, though not considered extinct, has not been spotted in the wild since 2003 when the species was discovered.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwc3578002w3b6nt2hqbf1a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            What\u2019s more, the toads\u2019 habitats have yet to be thoroughly explored, and scientists can only guess at how many unknown species in the region may exist, Scherz said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwc5d5l002z3b6nxy9060x6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cEven if you go to these places a few times, often you\u2019ll come back later, maybe with a different team, and you find things that you\u2019ve never seen before,\u201d he said. \u201cOur picture of the distribution of these species is far from complete.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/editor-note\/instances\/cmhw8etvo000i3b6n39eqxopo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"editor-note\" class=\"editor-note-elevate vossi-editor-note_elevate inline-placeholder \" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n    Mindy Weisberger is a science writer and media producer whose work has appeared in Live Science, Scientific American and How It Works magazine.
