Now tech giants are preparing for an AI helper to do even that for you one day.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwnpjxy000y3b6ni6c2k5zq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Google, Amazon and OpenAI are racing to add new AI-powered shopping tools to their services, all aiming to play a critical role in one of the fundamental things people do online: shop.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwnppu900123b6nqshggec6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf you can become really core to that, then you\u2019re able to monetize that attention in a lot of different ways,\u201d said Jeremy Goldman, senior director of marketing, retail and tech briefings at eMarketer.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwnpn0x00103b6ndzkndkv6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And whether they succeed could potentially determine the winners and losers of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/10\/22\/tech\/openai-chatgpt-atlas-browser-google-chrome-ai\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the next era of the web<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwjabef00063b6nnnrpwdzt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Shopping is one of the main things people do online, Goldman said. And with consumers increasingly using AI to make purchases, stalwarts like Amazon and Google are defending their turf against upstarts like OpenAI and Perplexity.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwjabef00093b6nuz41mj0y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As of September, US-based users can buy Etsy products directly from ChatGPT, keeping them in the chatbot for longer. OpenAI and Walmart announced <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/buy-it-in-chatgpt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a similar partnership<\/a> in October. And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/12\/tech\/perplexity-google-chrome-bid\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Perplexity\u2019s<\/a> Comet web browser lets users set up AI agents to handle tasks like shopping on Amazon. (The online shopping giant sent <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.aboutamazon.com\/2d\/47\/6801224e4607900ef4e61a80a319\/2025-10-31-amazon-cease-desist-ltr-to-perplexity.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a cease-and-desist letter<\/a> to the AI startup.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwjabef000a3b6nylq0q87c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            AI and online agents are expected to be involved in $73 billion worth of global online sales, or 22% of all orders placed, from the Tuesday before Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday, according to Salesforce data provided exclusively to CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwjabef000b3b6nfd2xm633@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That statistic covers a wide swath of the internet, encompassing everything from a ChatGPT query to an AI-generated suggestion on a retailer\u2019s website to a customer service agent who upsells a consumer. But Salesforce also said traffic from AI assistants grew 119% year-over-year in the first half of 2025.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwjabef000c3b6n0unc071d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Amid that shift, Google announced a slew of new AI shopping features on Thursday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwjabef000d3b6nwbapvdfj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For example, after asking a few questions about what a shopper is looking for, Google\u2019s AI agent will call local stores and ask whether retailers have the product in stock, along with information about promotions and pricing. Users will see the \u201cLet Google Call\u201d prompt under certain search results when the feature begins rolling out Thursday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwjabef000e3b6nmnmjrwap@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The search giant is also making it possible to shop within its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/05\/20\/tech\/google-future-of-search-io-event\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gemini chatbot app<\/a> and is launching a new tool that lets Google order an item on your behalf with your permission once the product falls below a certain price. Google said more than a billion shopping-related queries come through its platforms every day.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwjabef000g3b6nd72umbby@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Amazon has also sprinkled AI-powered features throughout its shopping app in recent years, including its Rufus assistant for answering product-related questions and AI recommendations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwjabef000h3b6nmw1cuggm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Rufus interactions are up 210% year-over-year, and those who use the chatbot are 60% more likely to complete a purchase, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said during the company\u2019s October earnings call.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwjabef000k3b6nsfadweur@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s easy to see how shopping plugs into people\u2019s online lives. Maybe you\u2019re using ChatGPT or Gemini to plan a party. Wouldn\u2019t it be nice if the AI could create a shopping cart with all the favors, decorations and snacks, too?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwjabef000l3b6n5trgsc3b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s early, but we really believe that these experiences just layer on,\u201d said Vidhya Srinivasan, vice president and general manager of ads and commerce at Google, \u201cand that they add to the way in which people can now seek information and do the things they need to get done.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwjabef000m3b6nc06rtqjl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At research firm Gartner, retail and hospitality analyst Brad Jashinsky said the company\u2019s retail clients are comparing AI to technology breakthroughs like the smartphone, internet and personal computer.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwjabef000n3b6nicje0mp8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When breakthroughs happen, \u201cthe established leaders routinely get disrupted, and it\u2019s an opportunity for both startups, but also maybe companies that are not the established leader, to jump ahead,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwjabef000o3b6nrre0dvm7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But that doesn\u2019t necessarily mean ChatGPT will become the next Amazon or Google overnight. Those platforms still have major advantages thanks to the ecosystems and services they\u2019ve built around their products, like Amazon Prime. And 66% of Americans haven\u2019t used ChatGPT, while 20% say they haven\u2019t heard of it, according to a June report from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2025\/06\/25\/34-of-us-adults-have-used-chatgpt-about-double-the-share-in-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Pew Research Center<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwjabef000p3b6nnp0psw9x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Still, in the tech industry\u2019s eyes, there\u2019s a lot more at stake than just winning online shopping.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwjabef000q3b6n0vsd25s7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Big tech firms are asking if they want to be part of someone else\u2019s vision for the internet \u2013 or create their own, said Goldman: \u201cDo I want to be a\u2026 spoke in somebody else\u2019s hub?\u201d\n    <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"You can already buy almost anything with the click of a mouse.
