From farmers deciding when to plant to coastal communities preparing for hurricanes, better forecasting can save lives, protect infrastructure, and support economies.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That is why\u00a0Microsoft\u00a0remains\u00a0deeply committed to\u00a0Aurora<\/a>,\u00a0an\u00a0AI model designed to help scientists understand Earth systems in new ways.\u00a0Trained on vast amounts of data,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0tuned to model the Earth\u2019s\u00a0systems.\u00a0Aurora has already shown promise across multiple\u00a0scenarios,\u00a0including\u00a0predicting\u00a0the weather, tracking\u00a0hurricanes and air quality,\u00a0and\u00a0modeling\u00a0ocean waves and energy flows.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Today,\u00a0we are reaffirming\u00a0our commitment:\u00a0keep Aurora open, collaborative, and impactful\u00a0so researchers can innovate faster and deliver solutions that help communities prepare, adapt, and thrive.\u00a0Scientific progress depends on openness and a strong global community, which is why Aurora will\u00a0progress\u00a0as an open-source platform, enabling scientists everywhere to contribute and apply it to new climate and weather challenges.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The\u00a0next\u00a0phase:\u00a0Fueling\u00a0innovation through research partnerships<\/p>\n

We\u2019re\u00a0collaborating\u00a0with Professor Rich Turner, a leader in machine learning research, and his lab at the\u00a0University of Cambridge<\/a>\u00a0through a Microsoft AI for Good grant\u00a0and\u00a0research scientists\u00a0to continue development of Aurora.\u00a0Originally\u00a0developed by Microsoft Research AI for Science,\u00a0with collaboration from\u00a0Professor Turner,\u00a0we believe Aurora has\u00a0the potential to change the way scientists around the world can use AI for\u00a0weather and\u00a0climate science.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Building on\u00a0our\u00a0SPARROW<\/a>\u00a0initiative,\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0also\u00a0investing in\u00a0research\u00a0of\u00a0open-source weather stations that can expand access to high-quality environmental data. These affordable, community-deployable systems are designed to help fill critical observation gaps and\u00a0strengthen the dependability of weather predictions where they matter most.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Making Aurora available to scientists everywhere<\/p>\n

Aurora\u2019s source code and model weights are already open\u2014but\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0going further. Together with Turner and Cambridge,\u00a0our AI for Good team will\u00a0open-source\u00a0future\u00a0releases\u00a0of Aurora\u00a0and\u00a0new models\u00a0that\u00a0are built\u00a0upon\u00a0it,\u00a0including training pipelines. By making Aurora open and free to build upon,\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0enabling researchers and developers everywhere to collaborate, contribute, and drive innovation together.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Empowering national meteorological services<\/p>\n

As with any technology, the measure of success for tools like Aurora is to have a positive impact on the lives of people.\u00a0Empowering national meteorological services across the Global South,\u00a0along\u00a0with\u00a0the\u00a0Global North,\u00a0is a\u00a0priority.\u00a0\u00a0We\u2019re\u00a0particularly focused on\u00a0the application\u00a0of Aurora\u00a0to help\u00a0meteorological services\u00a0develop and strengthen their own forecasting systems that are\u00a0tailored\u00a0to\u00a0their own local environments.\u00a0This\u00a0will allow them to adapt, extend,\u00a0and innovate on top of Aurora, improving the accuracy, reliability,\u00a0and reach of their forecasts.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Enabling a cross-industry ecosystem<\/p>\n

Aurora is trained on one of the largest collections of atmospheric data ever assembled to develop an AI forecasting model.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0then fine-tuned to perform a variety of specific tasks,\u00a0like predicting wave height or air quality, using modest amounts of\u00a0additional\u00a0data.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The application of such a model could unlock innovation across all kinds of other industries.\u00a0For example,\u00a0energy\u00a0companies and\u00a0commodity traders have expressed interest,\u00a0particularly\u00a0in\u00a0seeing how Aurora can be adapted to better predict\u00a0renewable\u00a0power\u00a0generation,\u00a0anticipate\u00a0extreme\u00a0weather events,\u00a0and\u00a0help\u00a0protect energy grids.\u00a0<\/p>\n

We are excited to see our\u00a0work on Aurora graduate\u00a0from a research project\u00a0into a truly collaborative, open-source effort.
