{"id":262893,"date":"2025-11-14T18:31:52","date_gmt":"2025-11-14T18:31:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/262893\/"},"modified":"2025-11-14T18:31:52","modified_gmt":"2025-11-14T18:31:52","slug":"pleiades-star-cluster-is-part-of-much-larger-stellar-structure-astronomers-say","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/262893\/","title":{"rendered":"Pleiades Star Cluster is Part of Much Larger Stellar Structure, Astronomers Say"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Also known as the Seven Sisters and Messier 45, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sci.news\/astronomy\/kepler-variability-pleiades-05165.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Pleiades<\/a> \u2014 an open star cluster about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sci.news\/astronomy\/roque-12-brown-dwarf-pleiades-companion-08523.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">440 light-years<\/a> from Earth in the constellation of Taurus \u2014 constitutes the bound core of a much larger structure that contains multiple known clusters distributed over 600 parsecs (1,950 light-years). Dubbed the Greater Pleiades Complex, this structure contains at least 3,091 stars.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.sci.news\/images\/enlarge13\/image_14350e-Pleiades.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-107241\" class=\"wp-image-107241 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/image_14350-Pleiades.jpg\" alt=\"The Pleiades. Pockets of this material clump together, eventually collapsing in on themselves to create what becomes a star\u2019s hot core.<\/p>\n<p>Star formation often happens in bursts, with many stars forming in close proximity and succession.<\/p>\n<p>Groups of stars that formed in the same molecular cloud are called a cluster.<\/p>\n<p>They remain gravitationally bound to each other for many millennia.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually \u2014 tens to hundreds of millions of years after their formation \u2014 the star-forming material from which they emerged is ejected from their vicinity by cosmic winds, radiation, and other astrophysical phenomena.<\/p>\n<p>When this occurs, individual stars dissolve into their host galaxy and it can be extremely challenging to identify their relationships and trace the chronology of their origin story, especially after 100 million or more years have passed.<\/p>\n<p>In new research, Dr. Luke Bouma from the Observatories of the Carnegie Institution for Science and colleagues focused on the Pleiades.<\/p>\n<p>Using data collected by NASA\u2019s TESS mission, ESA\u2019s Gaia spacecraft, and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), they found that this star cluster constitutes the core of a much larger structure of related stars that are distributed over more than 1,950 light-years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are calling this the Greater Pleiades Complex,\u201d Dr. Bouma said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt contains at least three previously known groups of stars, and likely two more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were able to determine that most of the members of this structure originated in the same giant stellar nursery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The key to their approach is the fact that the speed of a star\u2019s rotation slows as it ages.<\/p>\n<p>Their work leveraged a combination of stellar rotation observations from TESS (which was designed to identify exoplanets that transit in front of their host stars) and observations of stellar motion from Gaia (which was designed to map our Milky Way Galaxy).<\/p>\n<p>Using this information, they developed a new rotation-based way to single out and identify stars that share an origin story.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was only by combining data from Gaia, TESS, and SDSS that we were able to confidently identify new members of the Pleiades,\u201d Dr. Bouma said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn their own, the data from each mission were insufficient to reveal the full extent of the structure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut when we integrated them \u2014 linking stellar motions from Gaia, rotations from TESS, and chemistry from SDSS \u2014 a coherent picture emerged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was like assembling a jigsaw puzzle, where each dataset provided a different piece of the larger puzzle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beyond having similar ages, the authors demonstrated that the stars in the Greater Pleiades Complex have similar chemical compositions, and that the stars used to be closer together.<\/p>\n<p>The data from the SDSS\u2019 fifth generation were used for chemical abundance analysis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Pleiades has played a central role in human observations of the stars since antiquity,\u201d Dr. Bouma said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis work marks a big step toward understanding how the Pleiades has changed since it was born one hundred million years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the team, their new findings have broad implications.<\/p>\n<p>The Pleiades is not only an astrophysical benchmark for young stars and exoplanets but also a cultural touchstone featured worldwide in the Old Testament and Talmud, celebrated as Matariki in New Zealand, and even represented by the logo of Subaru in Japan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re realizing that many stars near the Sun are part of massive extended stellar families with complex structures,\u201d said University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\u2019s Professor Andrew Mann.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur work provides a new way to uncover these hidden relationships.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.3847\/1538-4357\/ae0724\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">paper<\/a> on the findings was published this week in the Astrophysical Journal.<\/p>\n<p>_____<\/p>\n<p>Andrew W.
