Russia\u2019s first domestically produced artificial intelligence-powered humanoid robot faceplanted during its first public demonstration<\/a> this week, underscoring the challenges Russia faces in competing with more established leaders in AI and robotics like the U.S. and China.\u200b<\/p>\n

The robot, named AIdol, was unveiled during a tech showcase at the Yarovit Hall Congress Center in Moscow on Monday. As the machine walked onto the stage accompanied by two handlers to \u201cGonna Fly Now,\u201d the theme from the 1976 film\u00a0Rocky, it waved to the audience before taking a few steps, losing its balance, and toppling over. Event staff rushed to cover the fallen robot with a black cloth and carried it from the stage, cutting the presentation short. You have to see it for yourself.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u200bVladimir Vitukhin, CEO of the Moscow-based startup Idol, attributed the fall to calibration issues potentially caused by the robot\u2019s stereo cameras being overly sensitive to the lighting conditions in the hall. \u201cThis is real-time learning, when a good mistake turns into knowledge, and a bad mistake turns into experience,\u201d Vitukhin told attendees following the incident, according to Newsweek<\/a>. \u201cI hope that this mistake will turn into an experience.\u201d\u200b<\/p>\n

The robot was later brought back onstage and managed to remain upright with assistance from handlers. Vitukhin maintained AIdol sustained no damage from the fall.\u200b<\/p>\n

AIdol is designed to perform three main functions: walking, object manipulation, and communication with people. The humanoid can perform up to six hours of autonomous operation, according to the company, and its face is capable of expressing at least 12 basic emotions and \u201chundreds\u201d of microexpressions through its flexible silicone skin. All of the robot\u2019s systems function offline. The video below offers a pretty good idea of what AIdol looks like up close, including its face.<\/p>\n

According to the company, 77% of AIdol\u2019s components are Russian-made, and it plans to raise that number<\/a> to 93% when the robot eventually enters mass production. Russia, of course, faces sanctions from Western nations over the country\u2019s invasion of Ukraine, which has restricted the country\u2019s access<\/a> to advanced electronics, semiconductor components, and other critical technologies needed for robotics development.\u200b<\/p>\n

Russia\u2019s robotics sector has struggled mightily<\/a> since it invaded Ukraine, when major international manufacturers exited the Russian market in response to sanctions. The country has faced ongoing challenges related to component shortages and a loss of engineering talent.\u200b<\/p>\n

Notably, AIdol\u2019s less-than-ideal debut really highlights just how far behind it is compared to some international competitors. Boston Dynamics\u2019 Atlas robot<\/a>, for example, can parkour and manipulate objects on its own, thanks to machine learning-powered vision systems. Chinese manufacturers have also made significant advances in humanoid robots\u2014just last week, world\u2019s richest man Elon Musk said<\/a> \u201cTesla<\/a> and China companies will dominate the [robotics] market.\u201d\u200b\u200b<\/p>\n

Russian President Vladimir Putin has long positioned artificial intelligence and robotics as critical to Russia\u2019s global standing and national security. In a widely quoted 2017 address to Russian students<\/a>, Putin declared that artificial intelligence represents \u201cthe future, not only for Russia, but for all humankind,\u201d warning that \u201cwhoever becomes the leader in this sphere will become the ruler of the world.\u201d He cautioned that monopolization of AI technology would be \u201cstrongly undesirable\u201d and pledged that if Russia achieved leadership in the field<\/a>, it would share its know-how with other nations \u201cthe same way we share our nuclear technologies today.\u201d\u200b<\/p>\n

Last February, Putin signed a 40-page decree updating Russia\u2019s National AI Development Strategy<\/a> through 2030, which explicitly cited \u201cunilateral restrictive measures introduced by unfriendly countries\u201d as creating new challenges for Russian AI development. The updated strategy acknowledged \u201cthe decision to restrict access to AI technologies, caused by unfair competition on the part of unfriendly foreign countries\u201d and other barriers impeding Russia\u2019s progress. He has said many times<\/a> that Russian AI must be built on the country\u2019s \u201cown cultural and linguistic foundations\u201d rather than imitating Western technologies, calling this approach \u201csovereign artificial intelligence<\/a>.\u201d\u200b<\/p>\n

The developers at Idol envision AIdol being deployed in manufacturing, logistics, and public-service areas like banks and airports. However, the company has not disclosed which specific AI system powers the robot, or when we can expect mass production to begin.\u200b\n<\/p>\n
