We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Your support makes all the difference.Read more<\/p>\n<p>Pickles are an incredibly versatile and deliciously salty snack beloved by many cultures around the world since the time of Cleopatra. <\/p>\n<p>The ancient Queen of Egypt <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ssaculinary\/posts\/cleopatra-credited-the-pickles-in-her-diet-in-contributing-to-her-health-and-leg\/1834627896719286\/\">ate pickled cucumbers<\/a> as a part of her beauty regimen 2,000 years ago. <\/p>\n<p>Now, some 67 percent of U.S. households eat them, chomping through a total of 5.2 million pickles each year, according to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/greatlakespickling.com\/what-is-national-pickle-day\/\">the Great Lakes Pickling Company<\/a>, or <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/widatcp\/videos\/national-pickle-day\/515663521469699\/\">around nine pounds per person<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPickles are fun, tangy, potentially health-promoting ways of eating cucumbers,\u201d Stanford Medicine behavioral scientist Dr. Marily Oppezzo said in a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/lifestylemedicine.stanford.edu\/in-a-pickle-unveiling-gut-friendly-pickles-for-your-health\/\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>They also come with major health benefits, including providing essential vitamins and nutrients. Although the brining process leaches some water out of the cucumbers, they\u2019re still over 90 percent water (Getty Images\/iStock)<\/p>\n<p>The briny truth<\/p>\n<p>Those pickles that come off the grocery store shelves and are preserved in vinegar are not the same as the fermented pickles in the refrigerated section. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile vinegar pickling is a common method, true fermentation in brine enriches them with beneficial probiotics for your gut,\u201d Oppezzo said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/health-and-families\/gut-health-food-benefits-b2806999.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Probiotics are live microorganisms<\/a> that contribute to a healthy balance of the millions of bacteria that live in our guts, shielding the intestines from unhealthy bacteria tied to anxiety, depression, and neurodegenerative diseases, according to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/nutrition\/high-protein-foods-the-best-protein-sources-to-include-in-a-healthy-diet\">Harvard Medical School<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbiotics are good for your brain and gut health,\u201d Cleveland Clinic registered dietitian Devon Peart <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/are-pickles-good-for-you\">explained<\/a>. \u201cHaving healthy gut bacteria can minimize symptoms of an irritable bowel, and it can help us digest food and absorb nutrients.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gherkins with gusto<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s not all the superfood does. <\/p>\n<p>Pickles are incredibly hydrating. Although the brining process leaches some water out of the cucumbers, they\u2019re still over 90 percent water. <\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re also a great source of the mineral potassium, with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/encyclopedia\/content?contenttypeid=76&amp;contentid=11937-1\">165 milligrams<\/a> per medium-sized pickle. Potassium is an electrolyte that supports hydration and can regulate muscle and nerve function.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why pickle juice is frequently utilized by professional athletes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;ve seen some people resolve cramping in their legs with a shot of pickle juice. Athletes will also often use pickle juice as an electrolyte replacement if they&#8217;re not using an oral rehydration solution,\u201d Cleveland Clinic registered dietitian Beth Czerwony said.<\/p>\n<p>The 26 micrograms of vitamin K in pickles has been <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/39466236\/.\">shown to reduce leg cramping<\/a> as well, and the vitamin is important for helping your blood clot and keeping bones strong.<\/p>\n<p>Pickles are rich in vitamin A, too, which is a powerful antioxidant known to keep vision clear and promote cell health.<\/p>\n<p>A superfood \u2014 but not for weight loss<\/p>\n<p>While cucumbers <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/news\/2025\/01\/17\/cucumbers-are-trendy-but-how-healthy-are-they\">only have 45 calories<\/a> and are considered a good veggie for weight loss by themselves, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/health\/blood-pressure-salt-foods-doctors-b2773393.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pickles are highly salty<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne large dill pickle has more than two-thirds of the ideal amount of sodium that an adult should have in a whole day,\u201d Peart noted. <\/p>\n<p>Americans should consume no more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium each day, but most get around 3,300mg, according to the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/healthy-living\/healthy-eating\/eat-smart\/sodium\/how-much-sodium-should-i-eat-per-day\">American Heart Association<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/iStock-2233353201.jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Those pickles that come off the grocery store shelves and are preserved in vinegar are not the same as the fermented pickles in the refrigerated section\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/><\/p>\n<p>open image in gallery<\/p>\n<p>Those pickles that come off the grocery store shelves and are preserved in vinegar are not the same as the fermented pickles in the refrigerated section (Getty Images\/iStock)<\/p>\n<p>However, there are some <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vlasic.com\/pickles\/reduced-sodium-kosher-dill-spears#:~:text=Reduced%20Sodium%20Kosher%20Dill%20Spears,(1379)\">low-sodium pickle options<\/a> \u2013 with a quarter less salt than traditional pickle jars and containers \u2013 if you\u2019re really craving the tangy taste and live with high blood pressure or heart issues.
