It’s been 29 years since Nigel Benn last fought professionally, but the British boxer is still in phenomenal shape. Rather than relaxing in retirement and enjoying his fight record of 42-5-1 — along with the fact that he held both the WBO middleweight and WBC super-middleweight titles during his career — Benn is still putting in the work in the gym.

And it’s certainly paying off. Sharing a post-workout photo on Instagram, he showed off his ripped physique to his followers. ‘Feeling better than ever for a 61 year old, got to look good for my wife Carolyne,’ he wrote. ‘See you this Friday darlin [sic].’

Staying Fighting Fit

Those improved energy levels will have proved useful in recent weeks and months for Benn. With his son Conor gearing up for his rematch fight against Chris Eubank Jr. this weekend, Nigel has been offering his support and experience during camp. The rematch comes after Conor lost the first fight earlier this year by unanimous decision.

But the contest cuts deeper than that – three decades ago, Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank Sr. competed in two thrilling bouts in 1990 and 1993, which finished with one win to the latter and one draw. And though he’s not officially part of Conor’s coaching team, Nigel is still getting involved in training. It’s no wonder he’s looking as good as ever.

During the open workout on November 12, Nigel even stepped into the ring and playfully fronted up to his son with some shadow boxing. Needless to say, Benn Sr. still looked super-sharp, throwing jabs, weaving around, and displaying some quick footwork.

While it’s unclear how Benn trains exactly in his 60s, he revealed just last month the sort of effort he is putting into his fitness. ‘Nice early session dun [sic], now time to hit the sauna,’ he wrote on Instagram. ‘Old man still got it in the gym. George [Liddard] getting ready for his fight come 17th October.’

Comeback Attempt

Even in retirement, Benn has paid close attention to his fitness. He quit smoking and drugs in 2008 after having a religious experience, while it’s only six years since he attempted to make a comeback to the ring in 2019, scheduling a fight against 40-year-old Sakio Bika, who had held the WBC world super-middleweight title in 2014. And while the British Boxing Board of control refused to sanction the fight, the British and Irish Boxing Authority allowed the bout to go ahead.

In addition to boxing sessions every day, Benn would also complete daily hour-long cycles on Zwift at 7am, and plenty of neck exercises to build up his strength. He sustained a shoulder injury during sparring in the month before the fight, however, curtailing his attempt to return to professional boxing.
