{"id":266394,"date":"2025-11-16T17:21:06","date_gmt":"2025-11-16T17:21:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/266394\/"},"modified":"2025-11-16T17:21:06","modified_gmt":"2025-11-16T17:21:06","slug":"can-cromers-banksy-artwork-survive-another-winter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/266394\/","title":{"rendered":"Can Cromer&#8217;s Banksy artwork survive another winter?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  Guerilla graffiti artist Banksy visited Norfolk\u00a0on his Great British Spraycation\u00a0in August 2021\u00a0&#8211; leaving his mark in coastal towns such as Great Yarmouth and Gorleston.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  But perhaps the most difficult to see of his spraycation\u00a0works sits slowly deteriorating\u00a0on a sea defence wall in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.edp24.co.uk\/news\/24589806.norfolk-beaches-among-top-20-most-relaxing-uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Cromer<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The art\u00a0once depicted\u00a0a crab with a shell on its back holding a sign saying &#8216;Luxury Rentals Only&#8217;, facing a trio of crabs without shells.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>The Banksy artwork in its prime, before being worn down by the sea and vandalised (Image: Sue Edwards)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  But\u00a0it has since been vandalised, with the words in the speech bubble now covered up with several exclamation marks and question marks above each of\u00a0the other three\u00a0crabs.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  In 2023,\u00a0 councillor Tim Adams, leader of North Norfolk District Council (NNDC), said he would be &#8220;surprised if [the Banksy] survives through the winter.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.edp24.co.uk\/news\/23784689.vandalised-banksy-cromer-lost-sea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">It will be lost to the sea eventually<\/a>.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  When contacted again for comment about the mural&#8217;s chances of survival by this paper a year later, the council said that it has\u00a0&#8220;survived much longer than everyone expected it to&#8221;.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  But now that the mural has outlived its prognosis from the council twice, questions have been raised as to\u00a0how long the fading art truly has left.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Now, as of November 2025, the art is on borrowed time, with council officials left uncertain if it can survive this winter.\n<\/p>\n<p>  Can the crabs survive another winter?<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>The mural&#8217;s deteriorated state as of December 2024 (Image: North Norfolk District Council)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  On the mural&#8217;s prospects of surviving this year&#8217;s colder months, a spokesman for NNDC said: &#8220;It&#8217;s deteriorated further [since 2024],\u00a0so it\u2019s definitely succumbing to the North Sea slowly but surely.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;The essence of it is still there, though, even if the original message has been covered over.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;It could very well have one last winter in it.
