The Leonid meteor shower peaks tonight, bringing a flurry of shooting stars to the night sky as Earth passes through the trail of debris shed by comet 55P\/Tempel-Tuttle.<\/p>\n<p>The <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/34500-leonid-meteor-shower-guide.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/34500-leonid-meteor-shower-guide.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Leonid meteor shower<\/a> is active from Nov. 3 to Dec 2 and peaks overnight on Nov. 16-17, when up to 10 <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/meteor-showers-shooting-stars.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/meteor-showers-shooting-stars.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">meteors<\/a> per hour may be visible radiating from a patch of sky in the constellation Leo, according to the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amsmeteors.org\/meteor-showers\/meteor-shower-calendar\/#Leonids\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.amsmeteors.org\/meteor-showers\/meteor-shower-calendar\/#Leonids\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">American Meteor Society<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"96fd575f-2c3e-46cb-8ae4-c3490058ecc2-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Meteors, or &#8220;shooting stars&#8221; occur when fragments of ancient <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/comets.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-redirect=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/53-comets-formation-discovery-and-exploration.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/comets.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">comets<\/a> slam into <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a>&#8216;s atmosphere at tens of thousands of miles per hour, burning up in a brilliant fiery display. Larger pieces can give rise to brilliant fireballs, which can outshine even the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/33619-visible-planets-guide.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/33619-visible-planets-guide.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">brightest planets<\/a> in the night sky.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-5ff52a06-1f0f-4ea8-bde4-6daef2d909f7\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>What time should I look for the Leonids?<\/p>\n<p id=\"24d7c232-3106-4a4f-954d-89e9a278d665\">The best time to look for Leonids is late at night on Nov. 16 through to the hours preceding dawn on Nov. 17, when the constellation Leo will be positioned high above the eastern horizon, with <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/7-jupiter-largest-planet-solar-system.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/7-jupiter-largest-planet-solar-system.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jupiter<\/a> shining brightly to its upper right. (Image credit: Future)<\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"012dd005-74e5-425a-bcb0-9bc52b58f194\">Be sure to wear warm clothing to combat the cold and allow at least 30 minutes for your eyes to adjust fully to the dark, to give yourself the best chance of spotting fainter members of the annual shower.
