Shakhram Giyasov\u2019s<\/a> motivation for demanding the WBA welterweight title shot he is owed next is deeply personal.
The unbeaten Uzbek contender promised his late daughter, Mariam, before she died March 19 from a rare brain condition that he would eventually become champion. Giyasov dedicated his fourth-round knockout of Franco Ocampo<\/a> on April 12 to her, but the championship commitment he made to her weighs on his heart every day.
That\u2019s why the 2016 Olympic silver medalist has no intention of accepting another step-aside offer so that WBA 147-pound champ Rolando \u201cRolly\u201d Romero<\/a> can take a higher-profile fight for more money. Giyasov allowed former WBA champ Eimantas Stanionis<\/a> to face Jaron Ennis<\/a>, then the IBF titleholder, in a championship unification clash in the main event April 12 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been an emotional seven months for Giyasov since then, though, and he doesn\u2019t want to waste any more time.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe championship fight is for my daughter,\u201d Giyasov told The Ring<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019ll give the belt to my daughter. It\u2019s my promise. I think I can do everything for my daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n

The birth of their second daughter, Hadeja, three months ago helped Giyasov and his wife during the grieving process.<\/p>\n

Training and fighting in Uzbekistan, where he stopped Russia’s Mark Urvanov (25-5-2, 11 KOs) in a tune-up fight Friday, has distracted him as well. The 32-year-old Giyasov (18-0, 11 KOs) has grown frustrated, however, from hearing about Romero (17-2, 13 KOs) possibly facing Manny Pacquiao<\/a> and seemingly everyone except him.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s very hard because I\u2019m the mandatory [challenger for] two years,\u201d Giyasov said. \u201cI\u2019m waiting to fight, for my chance at a world title. I\u2019ve been waiting a long time. I started my professional career in 2018. Seven years I\u2019m waiting. Now, I\u2019m ready for a title fight. Give me a chance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eddie Hearn, Giyasov\u2019s promoter, has pressed the WBA for an answer regarding Giyasov\u2019s title shot. Giyasov gets the sense Romero simply doesn\u2019t want to fight him because he wants to cash in on his huge upset of Ryan Garcia<\/a>, whom Romero dropped and unanimously outpointed<\/a> in the 12-round main event of The Ring\u2019s May 2 card at Times Square in New York.
Romero and Garcia fought for the WBA\u2019s secondary crown. North Las Vegas\u2019 Romero was elevated to full champion<\/a> once Ennis gave up his Ring, IBF and WBA belts to move up to the junior middleweight division.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think he\u2019s running from me,\u201d Giyasov said regarding Romero. \u201cI\u2019m ready for this fight, for all fights, for a title fight. If he\u2019s ready, I\u2019m always ready. I think it\u2019s a good fight for me, for him. It\u2019s an interesting fight for the fans. I\u2019m coming. I show my talent, my speed. I know Romero is a powerful guy, but I\u2019m also strong. All my life, I\u2019m ready for a world title fight. I\u2019m training every day. I know it\u2019s difficult, but I can do it and know this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Giyasov doesn\u2019t want to accept another tune-up bout just to keep sharp while he awaits his title shot.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis situation is no good for me,\u201d he said, \u201cbut I believe my chance is coming soon. I\u2019m ready.\u201d <\/p>\n
