There\u2019s a word for that | Taylor Swift"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">If you\u2019re wondering why Taylor Swift didn\u2019t respond to your social media post offering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2025\/aug\/26\/taylor-swift-travis-kelce-engaged\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">congratulations on her engagement<\/a>, then Cambridge Dictionary has a word for you: parasocial.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Defined as \u201cinvolving or relating to a connection that someone feels between themselves and a famous person they do not know\u201d, parasocial has been chosen by the dictionary as its word of the year, as people turn to chatbots, influencers and celebrities to feel connection in their online lives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The term first emerged in 1956 when University of Chicago sociologists observed TV viewers engaging in \u201cpara-social\u201d relationships with onscreen personalities, mirroring their bonds with family and friends \u2013 except this was a one-way attachment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Opportunities for asymmetrical relationships have mushroomed in the internet era, with social media and now artificial intelligence taking a niche academic term into the mainstream.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cParasocial captures the 2025 zeitgeist,\u201d said Colin McIntosh, a Cambridge Dictionary editor. \u201cMillions of people are engaged in parasocial relationships; many more are simply intrigued by their rise. The data reflects that, with the Cambridge Dictionary website seeing spikes in lookups for \u2018parasocial\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The dictionary cited Swift\u2019s engagement to NFL star Travis Kelce and Lily Allen\u2019s confessional breakup album West End Girl as parasocial moments of the year, with AI chatbots also getting a mention as they become <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2025\/may\/07\/experts-warn-therapy-ai-chatbots-are-not-safe-to-use\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">confidants, friends or romantic partners<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Lily Allen and her ex-husband, David Harbour. Photograph: Justin Tallis\/AFP\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Simone Schnall, professor of experimental social psychology at the University of Cambridge, said parasocial relationships have \u201credefined fandom, celebrity and, with AI, how ordinary people interact online\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Schnall said people have turned to influencers as trust in mainstream and traditional media breaks down, which can lead to \u201cunhealthy and intense relationships\u201d with social media stars.
