{"id":269961,"date":"2025-11-18T16:13:15","date_gmt":"2025-11-18T16:13:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/269961\/"},"modified":"2025-11-18T16:13:15","modified_gmt":"2025-11-18T16:13:15","slug":"wright-wright-adds-the-spencer-building-to-university-of-oxford-library","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/269961\/","title":{"rendered":"Wright &#038; Wright adds The Spencer Building to University of Oxford library"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>London studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/wright-and-wright-architects\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wright &amp; Wright<\/a> has expanded the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/university-of-oxford\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">University of Oxford<\/a>&#8216;s Corpus Christi College Library, tucking a limestone-fronted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/extensions\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">extension<\/a> into its original Grade I-listed site.<\/p>\n<p>Named The Spencer Building, the 479-square-metre extension consolidates the library&#8217;s collection of rare manuscripts and books into a single home, while providing reading spaces and step-free access.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2270354 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/spencer-building-corpus-christi-library-oxford-university-wright-wright-architects-uk-architecture-e.jpeg\" alt=\"The Spencer Building by Wright &amp; Wright\" width=\"2364\" height=\"2305\"  \/>Wright &amp; Wright has completed The Spencer Building at the University of Oxford<\/p>\n<p>The Spencer Building is the first extension to Corpus Christi College Library since its founding in the 16th century. It replaces a 1950s garage on a constrained site between a medieval city wall and the listed facade of the college&#8217;s quad.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightandwright.co.uk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wright &amp; Wright<\/a> fronted the extension with limestone cladding and a metal oriel window in a contemporary take on the surrounding fabric.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2270349 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1763482391_436_spencer-building-corpus-christi-library-oxford-university-wright-wright-architects-uk-architecture-e.jpeg\" alt=\"Aerial view of Oxford University\" width=\"2364\" height=\"2042\"  \/>It is the first extension to Corpus Christi College Library in its history<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;We wanted to design something that could respond to those constraints while still feeling calm and confident in its own right,&#8221; founder Claire Wright told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A large &#8216;library window&#8217; punctuates the facade, borrowing from the College&#8217;s distinctive windows that traditionally mark key social spaces such as the hall and chapel,&#8221; she added. &#8220;We hope it feels as though it&#8217;s always belonged there, even though it&#8217;s unmistakably of its time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2270357 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1763482392_815_spencer-building-corpus-christi-library-oxford-university-wright-wright-architects-uk-architecture-e.jpeg\" alt=\"The Spencer Building by Wright &amp; Wright\" width=\"2364\" height=\"2118\"  \/>The extension has a limestone facade<\/p>\n<p>Inside the extension, the thermal mass of the city wall to the west was used to create stable, low-energy conditions for the archive space, which is wrapped by an entrance foyer, reception and special access reading room on the ground floor.<\/p>\n<p>The concrete structure containing the archives played a large part in the building achieving Passivhaus standards, making it one of the first libraries in Oxford to receive the certification.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/09\/01\/wright-and-wright-lambeth-palace\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/wright-wright-lambeth-palace-renovation-sq_dezeen_2364_col_3-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Lambeth Palace by Wright &amp; Wright\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Wright and Wright balances &#8220;continuity and change&#8221; in Lambeth Palace overhaul\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A staircase and lift in the entrance foyer provide step-free access to each floor. The Spencer Building&#8217;s first two storeys then provide a direct link to the adjacent Old Library, making its historic spaces fully accessible for the first time in their history.<\/p>\n<p>The projecting oriel window at the front of the building pulls light into this circulation space and is flanked externally by two black drainpipes marked with golden owl motifs.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2270372 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1763482394_775_spencer-building-corpus-christi-library-oxford-university-wright-wright-architects-uk-architecture-e.jpeg\" alt=\"Library interior\" width=\"2208\" height=\"2364\"  \/>There is a skylit space beneath the roof<\/p>\n<p>This layout freed up the eastern side of The Spencer Building&#8217;s first, second and third floors to house a stepped stack of reading areas culminating in a skylit space beneath the roof, with balconies overlooking the floors below as well as the garden quad beyond.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The reading rooms are stacked across three levels within a single volume, so there&#8217;s always a sense of connection \u2013 you can see and feel the activity between floors,&#8221; Wright said. &#8220;Each level has a different character, from intimate individual carrels to larger, communal study tables, reflecting the range of ways students like to work.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2270379 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1763482395_797_spencer-building-corpus-christi-library-oxford-university-wright-wright-architects-uk-architecture-e.jpeg\" alt=\"The Spencer Building by Wright &amp; Wright\" width=\"1686\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The extension links directly to the Old Library<\/p>\n<p>As with the exterior, the internal palette of The Spencer Building was designed to both nod to the original college and be resilient, with &#8220;robust but warm&#8221; finishes in oak and brass used for the shelving and desks, alongside white walls and grey carpeted floors.<\/p>\n<p>The project is not the first carried out by Wright and Wright for Oxford University, which previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2023\/10\/04\/wright-and-wright-st-johns-college-oxford\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">redeveloped the historic St John&#8217;s College<\/a> by renovating its libraries and quadrangle, and adding a new study centre.<\/p>\n<p>Other recent projects by Wright and Wright include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/09\/01\/wright-and-wright-lambeth-palace\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">its overhaul of Lambeth Palace<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2024\/09\/13\/wright-and-wright-british-academy-headquarters-london\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">transformation of the British Academy headquarters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The photography is by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huftonandcrow.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hufton + Crow<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"London studio Wright &amp;
