After being linked with the Swansea manager\u2019s job on Monday, Tuesday saw Matos emerge as the favourite for the role. <\/p>\n

According to talkSPORT<\/a>\u2018s chief football correspondent, Alex Crook, the 37-year-old is now the \u201cleading contender\u201d after Swansea\u2019s top target, Kim Hellberg, reportedly<\/a> agreed a move to Middlesbrough<\/a> instead. <\/p>\n

Hellberg is currently manager of Swedish club Hammarby who are second in the Allsvenskan.<\/p>\n

This means Steven Gerrard<\/a> won\u2019t be taking over from Rob Edwards at the Riverside, having previously been linked with a return to management.<\/p>\n

At the moment, Matos is managing Maritimo in the Portuguese second division, where he joined as manager after working on Pep Lijnders\u2019 staff at Red Bull Salzburg for fewer than six months.<\/p>\n

Before arriving at Liverpool, where he served as development coach from 2019 until 2024, the Portuguese earned his stripes as a youth coach at Porto. <\/p>\n
