{"id":271226,"date":"2025-11-19T07:36:08","date_gmt":"2025-11-19T07:36:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/271226\/"},"modified":"2025-11-19T07:36:08","modified_gmt":"2025-11-19T07:36:08","slug":"u-s-is-the-biggest-recipient-of-chinese-loans-study-shows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/271226\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. is the biggest recipient of Chinese loans, study shows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"anchor-36e16f\" class=\"body-graf\">HONG KONG \u2014 The United States is the biggest recipient of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/china\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">China\u2019s<\/a> lending activities globally, according to a study that tracked Beijing\u2019s credit activities and found it is increasingly lending to higher-income countries over developing countries.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-821920\" class=\"body-graf\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aiddata.org\/publications\/chasing-china\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">report<\/a>, published on Tuesday by AidData, a research lab at U.S. university William &amp; Mary, said China\u2019s lending and grant giving totaled $2.2 trillion across 200 countries in every region of the world from 2000 to 2023.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-40a16b\" class=\"body-graf\">China has long been seen as a creditor to developing countries through its Belt and Road initiative, but is shifting toward lending to advanced economies \u2014 backing strategic infrastructure and high\u2011tech supply chains in areas such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence and clean energy.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-3bca4c\" class=\"body-graf\">Beijing\u2019s portfolio size is two to four times larger than previous estimates suggested, AidData said, adding that China remains the world\u2019s largest official creditor.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-380595\" class=\"body-graf\">More than three-quarters of China\u2019s overseas lending operations now support projects and activities in upper-middle-income countries and high-income countries.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-4cd555\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cMuch of the lending to wealthy countries is focused on critical infrastructure, critical minerals and the acquisition of high-tech assets like semiconductor companies,\u201d said lead author Brad Parks, AidData\u2019s executive director.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1634866693365_now_topstory_china_211021_1920x1080-e22e56.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-aa5a4b\" class=\"body-graf\">The United States received the most official sector credit from China, more than $200 billion for nearly 2,500 projects and activities, the report said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-8e31c2\" class=\"body-graf\">Chinese state-owned entities are \u201cactive in every corner and sector of the U.S.,\u201d bankrolling the construction of LNG projects in Texas and Louisiana, data centers in Northern Virginia, terminals at New York\u2019s John F. Kennedy International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport, the Matterhorn Express Natural Gas pipeline and the Dakota Access Oil pipeline, AidData said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-751da0\" class=\"body-graf\">Beijing has financed the acquisition of high-tech companies, while Chinese state-owned creditors have provided credit facilities for many Fortune 500 companies including Amazon, AT&amp;T, Verizon, Tesla, General Motors, Ford, Boeing and Disney, the report said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-ead178\" class=\"body-graf\">The share of lending to low and lower-middle income countries fell to 12% in 2023 from 88% in 2000. Beijing has also cut lending for infrastructure projects in the \u201cGlobal South,\u201d under its Belt and Road Initiative.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-ff83ac\" class=\"endmark body-graf\">At the same time, it has ramped up its share that supports middle-income and high-income countries to 76% in 2023 from 24% in 2000.
