Ultra-processed foods now make up nearly half of the average Australian\u2019s diet<\/a> because the country has \u201cfallen behind international best practice\u201d on nutrition, a co-author of a major new global report says.<\/p>\n The report found Australia, alongside the US and the UK, has some of the highest consumption rates of UPFs, which have become a \u201ccentral part of dietary patterns for most of the population\u201d and are a \u201ckey driver \u2026 of multiple diet-related chronic diseases\u201d.<\/p>\n Foods including ready meals, cereals, protein bars, fizzy drinks and fast food are associated with an increased risk<\/a> of obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and depression.<\/p>\n \u201cThere are no taxes on sugar and soft drinks [like] other countries are doing,\u201d said Prof Mark Lawrence, a co-author of the series from Deakin University.<\/p>\n Top newsIn picturesPortrait of Elisabeth Lederer was painted by Austrian artist Gustav Klimt between 1914 and 1916.
