{"id":271497,"date":"2025-11-19T11:06:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-19T11:06:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/271497\/"},"modified":"2025-11-19T11:06:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-19T11:06:09","slug":"dimwitted-man-taunts-yellowstone-wolves-this-could-end-really-badly-for-that-guy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/271497\/","title":{"rendered":"Dimwitted Man Taunts Yellowstone Wolves: &#8216;This Could End Really Badly For That Guy&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">A man who got to within several yards of a group of juvenile wolves in Yellowstone National Park was being stupid and disrespectful but wasn\u2019t in much real danger, a wolf biologist said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">A video of the Oct. 6 incident went viral\u00a0this week\u00a0after it was posted recently on the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/183268598737928\/\" title=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/183268598737928\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Yellowstone National Park: Invasion of the Idiots!\u201d<\/a>\u00a0social media site.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">A common assumption was that the footage\u00a0showed a \u201cpack\u201d of wolves closing in, perhaps planning to kill and devour the unidentified man.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">But that isn\u2019t what was really going on, biologist Doug Smith, who led the wolf program in Yellowstone National Park for nearly three decades, told Cowboy State Daily.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">It was\u00a0a few juvenile wolves who approached the man more out of curiosity than anything else, said Smith, who had viewed the video.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Wolf watcher Wendy Bush of Bozeman, Montana,\u00a0told Cowboy State Daily that she was at Yellowstone\u00a0that day, and, after witnessing the incident, she briefly spoke with the man.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">She described him as a younger man with Virginia license plates on his vehicle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">She said he appeared to be shaken up, \u201cbut relieved to be back at his car.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">She said the idea that the wolves were closing in to attack is \u201can extreme exaggeration\u201d of the encounter,\u00a0and\u00a0she faults the man for getting too close.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201cHe walked toward them and drew their attention when you could have walked downhill and not drawn their attention,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Like \u2018Teenage Kids\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Smith said that the risk to the man from the wolves might not have been \u201czero,\u201d but it was extremely low.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">At one point the man can be seen shooting bear spray at the wolves. It didn\u2019t deter them, likely because it was shot from too far away to hit any of the wolves directly, witnesses said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">One of the wolves apparently started rolling on the ground in a spot where some\u00a0of the bear spray had hit, Smith said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">He likened such antics to the behavior of \u201cteenage kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201cOne of the wolves rolled in it. They were messing around, having a good time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u2018This Could End Really Badly For That Guy\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">The video was taken by park visitor Keith Kerbs of Vancouver, Washington.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">He told Cowboy State Daily that at the time, what the man was doing seemed extremely dangerous.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201cI was honestly thinking in my head, \u2018this could get really bloody and gory, so maybe I shouldn\u2019t be videoing it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201cTo this day, I don\u2019t know what his motive or purpose was,\u201d Kerbs added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">About 100 people were watching the wolves from different locations when\u00a0the incident occurred, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Most of the spectators were at respectful distances from the wolves, hundreds of yards away, Kerbs said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">So, \u201ca lot of us were just standing there in shock, thinking, \u2018what is happening?\u2019\u201d when the man started walking toward the wolves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">When the wolves started moving toward him as well, the situation turned tense, Kerbs said. Spectators started shouting at him to get back away from the wolves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">In his video, bystanders can be heard making comments about the man being in \u201cmortal danger.\u201d And someone is heard stating that \u201cthis could end very badly for that guy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">At one point, the man and the wolves go into\u00a0a depression in the landscape and out of the line of sight of Kerbs\u2019 camera.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Invasion of the Idiots site manager Jen Mignard\u00a0said that part of the video made her hold her breath.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Part Of The Junction Butte Pack<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Wolf watcher Marisa de la Fuente of Bozeman said she also witnessed the incident and is upset that it\u2019s being touted as a \u201cbig, bad wolf\u201d story.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">She said the wolves in the video are part of the Junction Butte pack, which she\u2019s followed for years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">That pack currently has about 15 members, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">The handful of wolves in the video are \u201cpups,\u201d born in April, that were left behind that day when the pack\u2019s adults went out hunting, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">The pups had been feeling somewhat lost since their main \u201cbabysitter,\u201d\u00a0the famous female\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cowboystatedaily.com\/2025\/09\/23\/fans-morn-popular-yellowstone-wolf-reportedly-killed-by-hunter\/\" title=\"https:\/\/cowboystatedaily.com\/2025\/09\/23\/fans-morn-popular-yellowstone-wolf-reportedly-killed-by-hunter\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Wolf 1479F<\/a>, ventured out of the park in September and was shot legally by a hunter in Montana.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">On Oct. 6, the young wolves were sitting on a hillside and howling, the man had to have known where they were before walking toward them, she said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">She said that she witnessed the encounter from an angle different from where Kerbs\u2019 video was taken and saw everything.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">The wolves\u2019 body language conveyed curiosity, and not serious predatory behavior, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">At one point, the man was behind a boulder, and wolves apparently could not see him, de la Fuente said, although they could sense him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">They might have approached because they thought it was the adult wolves returning from the hunt, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Acclimation Is Bad For Wolves<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">When wolves get\u00a0too\u00a0acclimated to people, it ends badly for the wolves, de la Fuente said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">As she sees it, losing the fear of humans is what gets wolves such as 1479F\u00a0killed when they leave the park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">So it upsets her when people push in close to wolves\u00a0\u2014 bad human behavior she said she\u2019s seen on several occasions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Wolves should have a healthy fear of people, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201cI was screaming, \u2018run away!\u2019\u201d at the wolves during the encounter, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Smith agreed that people shouldn\u2019t put pressure on wolves and other wildlife in Yellowstone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">National parks should be \u201cwildlife sanctuaries\u201d where animals are left in peace, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201cThey (wild animals) need to catch\u00a0a\u00a0break in the national parks. It\u2019s the most protected ground in America,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>At Least The Guy Didn\u2019t Run<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">The man in the video was completely at fault for getting too close to the wolves, Smith said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">However, during the encounter, the man did the right thing by not turning his back and running, he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">As with any predator, running will trigger the chase instinct in wolves, Smith said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u00a0\u201cIf he had started running, they would have chased him. And even then, probably nothing would have happened,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Wolves are the least dangerous large predators to humans in North America, Smith said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">He said that even when protecting their young, wolves are extremely hesitant to attack people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">He said during his research, there were times he pulled wolf pups from dens while the mother wolf was there \u201cbarking\u201d at him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201cOh my goodness,\u00a0if I tried\u00a0pulling a grizzly cub out of a den, I would be cut from head to tail,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Consequences?<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Bush said she reported the incident with the man and the wolves to the National Park Service, and a ranger gathered some information from her, including the man\u2019s license plate number.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">An inquiry was sent to the Park Service, regarding whether any citations or fines had been issued in connection with the incident caught in Kerbs\u2019 video.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Park Service spokeswoman Linda Veress responded with an email that didn\u2019t address those questions but included a statement of the park\u2019s policy that visitors keep safe distances away from wildlife. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201cWolves may look beautiful, even fluffy from a distance, and that is part of their appeal.
