{"id":271831,"date":"2025-11-19T15:15:08","date_gmt":"2025-11-19T15:15:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/271831\/"},"modified":"2025-11-19T15:15:08","modified_gmt":"2025-11-19T15:15:08","slug":"europes-cookie-nightmare-is-crumbling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/271831\/","title":{"rendered":"Europe\u2019s cookie nightmare is crumbling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Instead of having to click accept or reject on a cookie pop-up for every website you visit in Europe, the EU is preparing to enforce rules that will allow users to set their preferences for cookies at the browser level. \u201cPeople can set their privacy preferences centrally \u2014 for example via the browser \u2014 and websites must respect them,\u201d says the EU. \u201cThis will drastically simplify users\u2019 online experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">This key change is part of a new <a href=\"https:\/\/digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu\/en\/faqs\/digital-package\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Digital Package of proposals<\/a> to simplify the EU\u2019s digital rules, and will initially see cookie prompts change to be a simplified yes or no single-click prompt ahead of the \u201ctechnological solutions\u201d eventually coming to browsers. Websites will be required to respect cookie choices for at least six months, and the EU also wants website owners to not use cookie banners for \u201charmless uses\u201d like counting website visits, to lessen the amount of pop-ups.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">The sheer amount of cookie pop-ups across Europe means people often just click any button to get access to a website, simply because of the annoyance instead of worrying about their privacy. \u201cThis is not a real choice made by citizens to protect their phones or computers and to choose what happens to their data,\u201d says the European Commission. \u201cToday\u2019s proposal modernizes the \u2018cookies rules\u2019, with the same strong protections for devices, allowing citizens to decide what cookies are placed on their connected devices (e.g. phones or computers)\u202fand what happens to their data.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">The EU\u2019s latest proposals will now head to the European Parliament.
