While investigating the Vernodden area of Jezero Crater \u2013 the crater where the rover first landed on the Red Planet in February 2021<\/a> \u2013 it found an unusually shaped rock that is not meant to be on the surface of Mars. <\/p>\n Where it may have come from is anyone\u2019s guess, but the \u201cunusually shaped rock\u201d \u2013\u00a0possibly a meteorite \u2013 has elements typically associated with iron-nickel meteorites formed in the core of large asteroids, the agency\u2019s Jet Propulsion Laboratory said in a blog post<\/a>.<\/p>\n Nickel-iron alloy is also a primary component of the Earth\u2019s core<\/a>.<\/p>\n The rock, has a diameter of about 31 inches, has been named \u201cPhippsaksla,\u201d and was identified as a target for the rover because of its high-standing appearance. <\/p>\n open image in gallery<\/p>\n NASA\u2019s Mars Perseverance rover has found a curious and unusually shaped rock on the surface of Mars. NASA has named it \u2018Phippsaksla\u2019 (NASA\/JPL-Caltech\/ASU)<\/p>\n It literally stood out among the lower lying, fragmented rocks in the area. <\/p>\n The rover was able to analyze its make up using the SuperCam instrument, which examines rocks and soils using a camera, laser and spectrometers that measure properties of light. <\/p>\n The SuperCam and \u201cPercy\u201d \u2013\u00a0the rover \u2013\u00a0are also looking for chemical materials that could be related to past life on Mars. <\/p>\n Earlier this year, Acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy and scientists said they had found the clearest signs of life on Mars to date in Jezero Crater<\/a>. <\/p>\n A sample Perseverance had collected from an ancient dry riverbed contains potential biosignatures.<\/p>\n \u201cTo the best of our current knowledge, some of the chemistry that shaped these rocks required either high temperatures or life, and we do not see evidence of high temperatures here,\u201d Texas A&M University geologist Dr. Michael Tice said in September<\/a>.<\/p>\n open image in gallery<\/p>\n The rock \u2018Phippsaksla\u2019 is seen at the upper left of this photo from the Perseverance Mars rover\u2019s camera (NASA\/JPL-Caltech\/ASU)<\/p>\n During their own missions, past Mars rovers, including Curiosity<\/a>, Opportunity and Spirit also found iron-nickel meteorites, including the \u201cLebanon\u201d<\/a> meteorite discovered in 2014<\/a> and the \u201cCacao\u201d meteorite spotted in 2023<\/a>. <\/p>\n![\"NASA\u2019s](\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Mars_Perseverance_ZL0_1629_0811552971_831EBY_N0790488ZCAM09712_1100LMJ.jpeg\")
