For a larger part of Fleetwood Mac<\/a>\u2018s success story, the pivotal characters seemed to be intimately interlaced. <\/p>\n As well as the two couples, Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks and the McVies, the group seemed bonded to one another in a way that most bands weren\u2019t. Like an addiction, the group provided both relief and pain for each other, a feeling perfectly captured by Annie Lebowitz\u2019s image of the band all sharing one big bed. <\/p>\n Such a dynamic was always going to combust, but before it did, the screws and steam that seemed to pop off from the Fleetwood Mac machine in the form of brutal or scathing songs about each other would become highlights for the band. Being honest and confessional became the name of the game for the outfit\u2019s songwriting powerhouses. <\/p>\n The Fleetwood Mac song \u2018Sara\u2019 is incontestably the most personal track that Stevie Nicks has ever written. The\u00a0Tusk\u00a0number captures the moment that the singer was left heartbroken and entirely bereft by the infidelity of her bandmate, Mick Fleetwood.<\/p>\n Writing a song about your lover deserting you for somebody else will always be a difficult task, a profoundly personal release of personal turmoil and one filled with raw emotion. What made Nicks\u2019 task infinitely more difficult was that the person who had wronged her was somebody she was forced to spend time with daily. <\/p>\n To make things even worse, he needed to assist her creativity. Rather than being overawed by the challenge at hand,\u00a0Stevie Nicks\u00a0<\/a>had no qualms about letting Mick Fleetwood know precisely how his behaviour made her feel, and \u2018Sara\u2019 remains one of the greatest tracks she has ever penned.<\/p>\n Nicks\u2019 relationship with Fleetwood was never a conventional one. While the relationship itself was an affair, the drummer broke a special bond the two enjoyed, an incident which left her feeling utterly betrayed. The relationship between the pair arrived when the\u00a0Fleetwood Mac<\/a>\u00a0singer found herself painfully lonely despite dating Don Henley. <\/p>\n While on the surface they may have appeared as the perfect rock couple, their busy schedules meant that, actually, they weren\u2019t much of a couple at all. The situation led to Nicks starting a cocaine-fuelled affair with her bandmate. She later opened up to Oprah about the \u201cdoomed\u201d experience, saying they were the \u201clast two people at a party,\u201d and that \u201cit was a doomed thing [that] caused pain for everybody\u201d.<\/p>\n Speculation around the meaning of the song has been spreading like wildfire for decades, and Don Henley even offered his thoughts on what inspired Nicks to write \u2018Sara<\/a>\u2018. When the couple were together in the late 1970s, Nicks fell pregnant. However, as they both spent their lives primarily on tour in different corners of the globe, she decided to abort the child because the timing simply wasn\u2019t right. Henley told GQ in 1991: \u201cI believe to the best of my knowledge she became pregnant by me. And she named the kid Sara, and she had an abortion and then wrote the song of the same name to the spirit of the aborted baby. I was building my house at the time, and there\u2019s a line in the song that says \u2018And when you build your house, call me.’\u201d<\/p>\n Nicks was rightly furious about Henley\u2019s decision to speak so openly and blas\u00e9 about such a sensitive topic. Although Henley\u2019s comments do have a degree of truth to them \u2013 according to the woman herself \u2013 Mick was the central muse. \u201cSara was pretty much about Mick,\u201d Nicks told MTV in 1988. \u201cSo, he was the \u2018great dark wing\u2019.
