The trust which runs the Queen\u2019s Medical Centre<\/a> in Nottingham says it has \u201creinforced its policy around the safe storage of patient belongings\u201d following the arrest of a nurse who stole from a patient with dementia.<\/p>\n Rexy Reyes<\/a> unlocked a secure cupboard and helped himself to a bank card belonging to the woman, who was in her 70s and under his care, and \u201cmaxed it out\u201d on 22 consecutive days, withdrawing almost \u00a36,500 from her account.<\/p>\n The 52-year-old, of Broxtowe Lane, Aspley, was jailed for 18 months yesterday, Monday, November 17, after a jury found him guilty of theft.<\/p>\n In a statement, Tracy Pilcher, Chief Nurse at Nottingham University Hospitals<\/a> NHS<\/a> Trust, said: \u201cWe are shocked and saddened by the actions of Rexy Reyes and our thoughts are with the victim\u2019s family.<\/p>\n \u201cThe actions of one individual against someone in their care will have caused further grief for the family at an already traumatic time and we are pleased to see justice served.<\/p>\n \u201cSince their arrest, the individual has not been in the workplace.<\/p>\n \u201cWe have already reinforced our policy around the safe storage of patient belongings and will now continue with a review of our approach to this in light of (this week\u2019s) outcome.\u201d<\/p>\n A trial at Nottingham Crown Court heard how Reyes took the card from the purse of the victim after she was admitted to ward B47 at QMC<\/a>, where he worked in early 2020.<\/p>\n Prosecutor Devni Kitulagoda told the jury how he then used it on 22 consecutive days at an ATM, which was at the hospital but not covered by any cameras.<\/p>\n She said: \u201cShe was a lady with dementia who had been admitted to the QMC <\/a>on January 24 as her condition was worsening.<\/p>\n \u201cShe was moved to a ward where the defendant worked as a nurse and her belongings were locked away in a locker that only staff have access to, not the patients or the families.<\/p>\n \u201cWithin her wallet was a piece of paper with the PIN number on it.\u201d<\/p>\n Miss Kitulagoda said the theft was discovered on February 22, 2020, when the victim\u2019s nephew, Mark Norman, went to her bungalow to check her post after she had been discharged from the QMC to a respite home in Cotgrave.<\/p>\n She said he had been asked to go there by his father, who had Power of Attorney for the victim, and when he opened a bank statement, he discovered the multiple withdrawals.<\/p>\n Mr Norman said: \u201cThis has shaken my confidence in the health service.<\/p>\n![\"Queen's](\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1_IH_TEM_06082019_QMC-28.jpg\")
