On that flight, New Glenn sent NASA&#8217;s twin <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/mars\/next-stop-not-mars-whats-ahead-for-nasas-newly-launched-escapade-red-planet-probes\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/mars\/next-stop-not-mars-whats-ahead-for-nasas-newly-launched-escapade-red-planet-probes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ESCAPADE Mars probes<\/a> on their desired trajectory, and the rocket&#8217;s first stage <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/watch-blue-origins-huge-new-glenn-rocket-ace-its-epic-landing-on-a-ship-at-sea-video\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/watch-blue-origins-huge-new-glenn-rocket-ace-its-epic-landing-on-a-ship-at-sea-video\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">landed successfully<\/a> on a ship at sea.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"2eaf75bc-1877-4799-a8ee-d73fd212674a-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">&#8220;The enhancements span propulsion, structures, avionics, reusability and recovery operations, and will be phased into upcoming New Glenn missions beginning with NG-3,&#8221; <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19584-blue-origin-quiet-plans-for-spaceships.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19584-blue-origin-quiet-plans-for-spaceships.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Origin<\/a> wrote in an <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.blueorigin.com\/news\/new-glenn-upgraded-engines-subcooled-components-drive-enhanced-performance\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.blueorigin.com\/news\/new-glenn-upgraded-engines-subcooled-components-drive-enhanced-performance\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">update today.<\/a> (NG-3 is the rocket&#8217;s third mission, which is expected to launch early next year.)<\/p>\n<p>Best picks for you<\/p>\n<p id=\"fcb3d4f1-ded0-4863-9ae7-12d369cb45a7\">New Glenn&#8217;s reusable first stage is powered by seven of Blue Origin&#8217;s BE-4 engines, and its second stage features two BE-3Us. According to the update, both of these engines are getting an upgrade, which will boost the first stage&#8217;s thrust from 3.9 million to 4.5 million pounds per foot (17,219 to 19,928 kilonewtons) and the upper stage&#8217;s from 320,000 to 400,000 pounds per foot (1,423 to 1,779 kN).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Additional vehicle upgrades include a reusable fairing to support increased flight rates, an updated lower-cost tank design and a higher-performing and reusable thermal protection system to improve turnaround time,&#8221; Blue Origin said.<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s update also includes some even bigger news: Blue Origin plans to build a &#8220;super-heavy&#8221; version of the rocket, which it calls New Glenn 9&#215;4. The name is a nod to the increased number of engines \u2014 nine BE-4s on the first stage and four BE-3Us up top.<\/p>\n<p>New Glenn 9&#215;4 will be capable of lofting 77 tons (70 metric tons) of payload to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit&#039;\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">low Earth orbit<\/a>, compared to 50 tons (45 mt) for the original &#8220;7&#215;2&#8221; variant. The new rocket will also have an even bigger payload fairing \u2014 one that&#8217;s 28.5 feet (8.7 meters) wide, compared to an initial 23 feet (7 m).<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>That baseline 23-foot-wide fairing was already a space industry standout. For example, the payload fairing of SpaceX&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/39779-falcon-heavy-facts.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/39779-falcon-heavy-facts.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Falcon Heavy<\/a> rocket is 17 feet (5.2 m) across.<\/p>\n<p id=\"1b2442bb-8dea-442e-9ede-27b0bd1bd246\">Today&#8217;s update doesn&#8217;t give a timeline for the development of New Glenn 9&#215;4 (which could really use a catchier name). But it does stress that the new rocket won&#8217;t displace its older cousin.<\/p>\n<p>Both New Glenn variants &#8220;will serve the market concurrently, giving customers more launch options for their missions, including <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starlink-satellites.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starlink-satellites.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">megaconstellations<\/a>, lunar and deep-space exploration, and national security imperatives such as <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/satellites\/space-forces-golden-dome-chief-says-space-based-missile-interceptors-are-possible-today-we-have-proven-every-element-of-the-physics\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/satellites\/space-forces-golden-dome-chief-says-space-based-missile-interceptors-are-possible-today-we-have-proven-every-element-of-the-physics\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Golden Dome<\/a>,&#8221; Blue Origin wrote.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Blue Origin&#8217;s New Glenn rocket is getting even more powerful.
