\u201cWhere did I leave my soul? Where did I drop that ball?\u201d asks Ella Eyre<\/a> on her comeback album, Everything, in Time. It has, after all, been 12 years since her husky voice snagged clubbers\u2019 hearts when she guested on Rudimental<\/a>\u2019s chart-topping \u201cWaiting All Night\u201d (2013) and a decade since the release of her solo debut album, Feline (2015). Although she released the dancehall-inflected single \u201cNew Me\u201d in 2020, she last achieved chart success singing on Sigala\u2019s \u201cCame Here for Love\u201d (2017) and \u201cJust Got Paid\u201d (2018).<\/p>\n

It appears that, like fellow pop singer Raye, <\/a>Eyre has really struggled to climb out of the box marked \u201cDance-Pop Guest Vocalist\u201d into which her major label dropped her. Like Raye, she yearned to express herself on her own terms and so has regrouped and is releasing this music as an independent artist. And if Eyre\u2019s solid, rasping pop-soul record lacks Raye\u2019s original, buttonholing oomph, you can still feel the confidence she feels in stretching out in her own territory. <\/p>\n

The songs on Everything, in Time are well crafted and (despite recent vocal surgery) Eyre\u2019s voice remains a powerful instrument, capable of delivering lines with real narrative clout. Single \u201cSpace\u201d is a brass-backed belter of an empowerment anthem, on which she demands a clear break from an ex: \u201cDon\u2019t want your face breathing in my universe\/ I\u2019m talking intergalactic, travel a light year away.\u201d \u201cHead in the Ground\u201d has an old-school, hand-clapping gospel warmth with a swaggering bass and low-slung rap section courtesy of Tiggs Da Author.<\/p>\n

Both the title track and \u201cRed Flags & Love Hearts\u201d are the songs most indebted to Eyre\u2019s fellow Brit School graduate, Amy Winehouse. They emulate the late Camden queen\u2019s loping, rattling drums and prowling, defiant, jazzy delivery. But they do it well. \u201cEverything, in Time\u201d features some deliciously funky electric guitar work. Eyre\u2019s voice \u2013 lower and grittier than of old \u2013 reaches passionately into the confessional chorus (\u201cI get ahead of my feelings\/ Patience isn\u2019t my thing\u201d) with the lip-curling cool of a vintage Memphis diva. \u201cRed Flags & Love Hearts\u201d, meanwhile, struts away from old mistakes with Caribbean-inflected cool, calling out a gaslighter and owning her complicity in changing \u201call the words to every song that you sing\u201d. <\/p>\n

There\u2019s an unexpected, proggy synthesiser on the mellower \u201cKintsugi\u201d and a walloping melodramatic, rock guitar-backed vocal hook to \u201cAin\u2019t No Love That Blind\u201d. Over the relaxed, loping beat of \u201cHigh on the Internet\u201d, Eyre speaks for many of us in pulling away from the limiting dopamine hits delivered by scrolling. \u201cDon\u2019t get mad when I disconnect,\u201d she sings, \u201cI don\u2019t mean no disrespect\u2026\u201d <\/p>\n

In recent interviews, she\u2019s spoken about the stress she felt agonising \u201cfor hours\u201d about unkind comments about her music and appearance on social media. It\u2019s pleasant to sink into the cushions of her new attitude. True, these songs feel familiar.
