The operation marks a major step toward the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-2-humans-moon-orbit\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-2-humans-moon-orbit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis 2 mission<\/a>, which is set to send astronauts around the moon in early 2026.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-5ec28b19-106d-46ec-97fc-1e5680d2aeaa\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>What is it?<\/p>\n<p id=\"b70aae2c-ee29-4a78-8d59-5773d52cde6e\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Artemis 2 represents the first time humans will travel to the moon since the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17287-apollo-17-last-moon-landing.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17287-apollo-17-last-moon-landing.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Apollo 17 mission<\/a> in 1972. While it will not involve a lunar landing, Artemis 2 is critical for validating the performance of the SLS rocket, Orion spacecraft, life-support systems, and deep-space operational procedures with astronauts onboard. Its heat shield\u2014the largest ever built for a human spacecraft \u2014 will protect the crew during reentry at nearly 25,000 mph (40,000 kph).<\/p>\n<p>Artemis 2 is a foundational step toward establishing a sustained human presence on and around the moon.
