\"\"<\/a>Lucasfilm<\/p>\n

Filmmaker Shawn Levy (\u201cDeadpool & Wolverine,\u201d \u201cReal Steel\u201d) is currently doing a bit of promotion for the final season of \u201cStranger Things\u201d launching next week, while at the same time is still in the midst of production of the new \u201cStar Wars: Starfighter\u201d film starring Ryan Gosling.<\/p>\n

As has been previously reported, the project is an all-new standalone adventure rumoured to be set five years after the defeat of Palpatine and the First Order in \u201cStar Wars: The Rise of Skywalker\u201d.<\/p>\n

Speaking with Kim Masters on The Business<\/a> podcast (via The Playlist<\/a>) recently, Levy says he was surprised by how much trust and creative freedom he received from Lucasfilm in regards to the film and how unexpectedly liberating it has been. He says Lucasfilm first approached him in August 2022:<\/p>\n

\u201c[Kathleen Kennedy] said, \u2018I want you to do a \u2018Star Wars\u2019 movie.\u2019 And I said, \u2018Well, what\u2019s it a prequel to? What\u2019s it a sequel to? Which one is it?\u2019 The answer was, \u2018It\u2019s whatever you want it to be. You pick the writer, you pick the story, just imbue it with the feeling that your movies have.’\u201d<\/p>\n

That led to him suggesting: \u201clet\u2019s make an entirely original \u2018Star Wars\u2019 movie\u201d and he brought in Jonathan Tropper to help write it. From there, Lucasfilm was the one pushing for it to be more and more standalone:<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no mandate or interference other than the constant encouragement, \u2018Make this new.\u2019 And that\u2019s the truth.<\/p>\n

Every time I\u2019ve asked, \u2018Should I use this character that was maybe in that movie?\u2019 Every time it\u2019s, \u2018You know what? People have seen that. Do something new.\u2019<\/p>\n

Unlike \u2018Solo\u2019\u2026 unlike \u2018Rise of Skywalker,\u2019 which was a sequel to two other movies and ultimately a ninth film in the Skywalker saga, \u2018Starfighter\u2019 is all new characters based on new ideas that Jonathan and I cooked up alone and together.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s in a time period that\u2019s never been in a \u2018Star Wars\u2019 movie. It is not about legacy characters. And while it does have, I hope, the sense of joy and adventure that \u2018A New Hope\u2019 introduced us to back in 1977, this is a new \u2018Star Wars\u2019 adventure\u201d<\/p>\n

Levy adds that Lucasfilm\u2019s attitude has been quite incredibly hands-off throughout the process, though as he experienced in his trip to \u201cStar Wars Celebration\u201d in Japan it seems that he\u2019s well aware of the pressure he\u2019s under:<\/p>\n

\u201cSo far, I\u2019ve had more freedom on this movie\u2026 It\u2019s equal to any other movie I\u2019ve made, including the original movies like \u2018Free Guy\u2019 and \u2018The Adam Project\u2019.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s still terrifying. Let me make that clear. You still want to get it right. The appetite of the fan base and the expectations of the fan base are intense. And it\u2019s palpable.<\/p>\n

What I learned [at Celebration] is the thirst for something new at this moment in time. So I feel lucky that that\u2019s what I\u2019m making right now.\u201d<\/p>\n
