{"id":276745,"date":"2025-11-22T05:58:15","date_gmt":"2025-11-22T05:58:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/276745\/"},"modified":"2025-11-22T05:58:15","modified_gmt":"2025-11-22T05:58:15","slug":"two-strange-giant-blobs-deep-inside-earth-may-finally-be-explained-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/276745\/","title":{"rendered":"Two Strange Giant &#8216;Blobs&#8217; Deep Inside Earth May Finally Be Explained : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the strangest mysteries about our Earth is the presence of two dense, giant blobs inexplicably clustered above the planet&#8217;s core.<\/p>\n<p>Now, new models might reveal where they have come from, and it&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-021-22185-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">neither of<\/a> the expected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/vast-mysterious-fragments-of-an-alien-world-may-be-buried-within-earth-study-finds\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">origin stories<\/a>. Rather, some material may have oozed from a leaking core when Earth was newly formed eons ago, and mixed with the mantle to create the so-called large low-shear-velocity provinces (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Large_low-shear-velocity_provinces\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">LLSVPs<\/a>) we see today.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These are not random oddities,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rutgers.edu\/news\/study-reveals-why-mysterious-structures-within-earths-mantle-hold-clues-life-here\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says geodynamicist Yoshinori Miyazaki<\/a> of Rutgers University. &#8220;They are fingerprints of Earth&#8217;s earliest history. If we can understand why they exist, we can understand how our planet formed and why it became habitable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/earths-inner-core-is-mysteriously-changing-shape-study-reveals\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth&#8217;s Inner Core Is Mysteriously Changing Shape, Study Reveals<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/two-weird-blobs-deep-inside-earth-are-surprisingly-different\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">two LLSVPs<\/a> were discovered in the 1980s in seismic data collected from earthquakes. This data showed the presence of two large regions in Earth&#8217;s lowermost mantle, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/something-mysterious-under-southern-africa-dramatically-weakening-earth-s-magnetic-field-south-atlantic-anomaly\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">one under Africa<\/a> and the other under the Pacific Ocean. They extend upwards from the core-mantle boundary, which sits around 2,900 kilometers (nearly 1,800 miles) below Earth&#8217;s surface.<\/p>\n<p>Through these patches, the seismic waves travel with distinct sluggishness, implying a different composition from the surrounding material.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists have previously proposed varying explanations, including remnants of <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.gsf.2018.03.005\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">old tectonic slabs<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41561-021-00871-5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cooling magma ocean<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-detect-traces-of-an-ancient-alien-world-beneath-earths-mantle\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">chunks of a giant object<\/a> named Theia that once collided with Earth to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/striking-evidence-of-water-imbalance-on-the-moon-hints-at-a-collision\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">make the Moon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1760449689_870_0.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Thumbnail\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" class=\"youtube-thumbnail-preview\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> frameborder=&#8221;0\u2033 allow=&#8221;accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share&#8221; referrerpolicy=&#8221;strict-origin-when-cross-origin&#8221; allowfullscreen&gt;<\/p>\n<p>These blobs aren&#8217;t just a curiosity. The African blob, in particular, has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/nasa-is-tracking-a-vast-anomaly-growing-in-earths-magnetic-field\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">implicated in a weakening<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/vast-anomaly-in-earths-magnetic-field-keeps-growing-satellites-reveal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth&#8217;s magnetic field over the Atlantic Ocean<\/a>. Some scientists think that the blobs played a role in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/strange-blobs-deep-within-earth-may-have-created-plate-tectonics\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">formation of Earth&#8217;s tectonic plates<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What they are, and how they got there, may be tied to the way our planet evolved and how it behaves now, with different possibilities meaning different things for that evolution and behavior.<\/p>\n<p>One recent study found that the blobs are very <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/colossal-anomalies-in-earths-mantle-arent-what-we-thought\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">old and stable<\/a>, which is consistent with the magma ocean theory.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/yoshi-geo-image-1_promo-642x642.jpg\" alt=\"An artist's impression of a magma ocean next to the core-mantle boundary.\" width=\"642\" height=\"642\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-182662\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>An artist&#8217;s impression of a magma ocean next to the core-mantle boundary. As this ocean cooled, it differentiated, with the heavier materials separating out and sinking down.<\/p>\n<p>This is <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/nature06355\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">supported<\/a> by the presence of another kind of structure \u2013 thin patches at the boundary between the core and the mantle known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/earths-core-appears-to-be-wr+apped-in-an-ancient-unexpected-structure\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ultra-low velocity zones<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ultra-low_velocity_zone\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ULVZs<\/a>), which correlate with the edges of the LLSVPs where seismic waves travel <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.egu.eu\/divisions\/gd\/2020\/03\/04\/should-we-still-study-llsvps\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">up to an order of magnitude<\/a> more slowly than they do through large low-shear-velocity provinces.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1763791095_455_0.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Thumbnail\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" class=\"youtube-thumbnail-preview\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> frameborder=&#8221;0\u2033 allow=&#8221;accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share&#8221; referrerpolicy=&#8221;strict-origin-when-cross-origin&#8221; allowfullscreen&gt;<\/p>\n<p>For the magma ocean theory to be correct, Earth would need to have nice, neat, strongly defined layers like a cake, with a layer above the core-mantle boundary consisting of a decent amount of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ferropericlase\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ferropericlase<\/a>. However, seismic data indicate a much lower ferropericlase content, while the very presence and messily piled configuration of the LLSVPs and ULVZs contradict this model.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That contradiction was the starting point,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rutgers.edu\/news\/study-reveals-why-mysterious-structures-within-earths-mantle-hold-clues-life-here\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Miyazaki explains<\/a>. &#8220;If we start from the magma ocean and do the calculations, we don&#8217;t get what we see in Earth&#8217;s mantle today. Something was missing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So the researchers conducted modeling to determine what was missing. They mixed up the basic ingredients for Earth and simulated how they cooled, with and without material leaking from the planet&#8217;s core. That revealed the secret ingredient.<\/p>\n<p>Not every element cools and crystallizes at the same rate. As the core cools and shrinks under pressure, according to the models, lighter components such as magnesium oxide and silicon dioxide crystallize more readily than the iron in the mix.
