There are some rock stars who seemed to be crushed under the weight of celebrity. Who charged into the spotlight as a gunslinging madman, but slowly, under that warm glow of attention, became wilted and mushy. Lemmy Kilmister<\/a>\u00a0was never one to mince his words. <\/p>\n

From his consistent pleas to the rock press to stop calling Mot\u00f6rhead, largely considered one of the heaviest metal bands of all time, heavy metal, to his honest appraisal of the benefits of amphetamines (\u201ccoke\u2019s all right, but speed\u2019s better\u201d), he was one of the most frank figures in music.<\/p>\n

Having had a hand in the formation of heavy metal, he took that unflinching honesty and assessed the development of metal in the late 1990s. His take on some of the biggest names to come out of the movement? \u201cCrap.\u201d<\/p>\n

The likes of Limp Bizkit, Slipknot, and Tool were all in his firing line. Talking to Ear Candy in 2000, he said Limp Bizkit, who by this time had three studio albums out and were at the forefront of nu-metal, were not reflective of the version of rock and roll he\u2019d devised.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople like Limp Bizkit, I don\u2019t understand it,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t understand their success.\u201d He wasn\u2019t phased by people enjoying it but seemed genuinely confused as to why their music appealed. \u201cWhat the fuck is this, it\u2019s just rubbish!\u201d he baulked. <\/p>\n

Kilmister wouldn\u2019t stop there. It wasn\u2019t that he didn\u2019t understand their sound, so to speak, is what that they appeared to be entirely juvenile and without the metal edge that he so dearly desired in his favourite bands. \u201cYou\u2019re just garage attendants with fucking gas masks on. And I mean, I don\u2019t mind kids having their own thing, I\u2019m all for it. When you\u2019re 17, you want a 17-year-old band to play for you, you don\u2019t want these old fuckers like me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Slipknot weren\u2019t exempt from his criticism either, with him describing them as \u201cjust crap\u201d as a unit. \u201cAnd I know crap when I hear it,\u201d he assured. \u201cBeen listening to it all my life, you know? A lot of these new bands have a riff and no song. I was brought up to admire songs. A good well-crafted song. Like the Beatles, five years into their career and they were doing \u2018Yesterday\u201d.\u201d<\/p>\n

A lot of his ire stemmed from the fact that throughout the \u201990s, Mot\u00f6rhead were releasing some of their most critically acclaimed records, like 1919 and March \u00f6r Die. While they were trying to inject some old-school rock and roll<\/a> into the metal scene, they were coming up against grunge, nu-metal and progressive rock.<\/p>\n

This, he believed, was why Mot\u00f6rhead didn\u2019t have a bigger American audience. \u201cWe\u2019re not pretty enough, and the music\u2019s too brutal for them,\u201d he said, naming Tool as one example of a band that seemed to seize on American audiences\u2019 tastes for something more avant-garde.<\/p>\n

Marilyn Manson also cropped up in a conversation with Hot Press as an example of a musician who built their brand of sheer weirdness rather than musicality. \u201cAll mouth and no tights\u201d was Lemmy\u2019s assessment. \u201cThe show\u2019s great, but that last record of his was hopeless. Fair play to him for getting up people\u2019s noses. But he needs to come up with a few decent tunes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEverything there is fad-driven,\u201d he lamented. \u201cLimp fucking Bizkit and Tool and all that. It\u2019s just fucking hopeless. If that\u2019s the future of rock \u2018n\u2019 roll, it\u2019s suicide for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
