He doesn’t touch the defender, and the defender doesn’t see him. He has his eyes on Jonah Ayunga, so that has to be a subjective decision from the referee to make: ‘Is he actually interfering with play?’ And he isn’t even called over for that.

“That’s hard to take. That’s four goals in four games disallowed. There will, no doubt, be some sort of phrase made up to justify their reason for disallowing it, and the referee not being called up to the monitor.”

🗣️ “We have a goal disallowed that, again, they’ll make some sort of reason up to justify it”

Stephen Robinson isn’t happy with the decision to rule out St Mirren’s goal in their defeat to Celtic ⤵️ pic.twitter.com/FA1z78SuLx

— Sky Sports Scotland (@ScotlandSky) November 22, 2025

View Tweet

Sky reporter challenges Robinson

Following Robinson’s comments, he was challenged by Sky Sports reporter Luke Shanley, who pointed out that McMenamin, the man offside, is ‘motioning towards’ Scales, as he offered him a different view on matters.

But despite that, Robinson was adamant that his player wasn’t ‘interfering’ with play, and St Mirren should have opened the scoring, as Celtic sealed a crucial three points in Paisley.

Sky reporter: “Let’s look at both sides of it then. There is a view to say that maybe Liam Scales is looking over his left shoulder at Ayunga, or that Conor McMenamin is standing in a position which he could motion towards Liam Scales, and that’s maybe why.

“Could you see both sides of the argument? Or do you look at it purely just that first one?”

Robinson: “Certainly, the referee has to come and make the decision. He doesn’t interfere with the goalkeeper, this side of the ball. He doesn’t touch the defender. He does make an early run, but he’s not actually going for the ball, and the ball is in the back of the net.

“The defender has put the ball into the back of the net. That has to be the referee that has to make that call, that’s not a factual decision. Yes, he’s offside, but he doesn’t interfere with the play. You could say, ‘he motions towards the ball.’”

It was the late, late show from Celtic once again in Paisley against St Mirren.
