{"id":278615,"date":"2025-11-23T08:19:14","date_gmt":"2025-11-23T08:19:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/278615\/"},"modified":"2025-11-23T08:19:14","modified_gmt":"2025-11-23T08:19:14","slug":"hastings-contemporary-art-gallery-to-install-mobile-studio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/278615\/","title":{"rendered":"Hastings Contemporary art gallery to install mobile studio"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  Hastings Contemporary will place the studio in an open courtyard next to the gallery on Rock-a-Nore Road.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Hastings Borough Council approved the plans on November 12.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The area, presently a shingle square surrounded by paving, will be transformed with sand-coloured permeable block paving.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The mobile studio will be parked to one side of the space.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>The empty square where the studio will be installed (Image: Oaten Architects)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Box planters will frame the performance and display area created when the studio is opened.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The gallery aims to make the square lively with public events and mobile art workshops.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The mobile studio will host various activities, including drawing and painting workshops, music and theatrical performances, and summer creative activities in schools.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The gallery plans to run specially funded bespoke workshops with current funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund for community outreach sessions.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  There is also funding from Historic England for 15 skills-sharing workshops.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>The mobile studio which will be installed beside the gallery (Image: Oaten Architects)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  These will focus on endangered skills associated with the fishing fleet, such as sign painting, net and rope making, knot printing, lag making, fish filleting, smoking, and printing.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The studio will also be used for internal meetings weekly.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The gallery sees the mobile studio as a chance to work with local festivals, events, and organisations, such as Coastal Currents, Hastings Storytelling Festival, St Leonard\u2019s Festival, Jack in the Green, Sanctuary Festival, and Fat Tuesday.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The studio will be used by the gallery alone sometimes, and for small groups of up to 12 people at other times.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>The site of the mobile studio outlined in red (Image: Oaten Architects)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  There will be occasions when a whole school class of up to 40 people will use the square and mobile studio.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  For on-site performances, which are expected to be unlikely to be more than six a year, a small crowd of around 30 to 50 people is anticipated.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>A visualisation of the proposed studio (Image: Oaten Architects)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The planning application received four letters of objection, including one on behalf of Old Hastings Preservation Society.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  However, it also received eight letters of support.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Council planning officers ultimately decided: &#8220;The development proposals are considered to be beneficial to local tourism and will encourage new visitors to the old town.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;In addition, the proposed mobile studio is sensitively designed and will enliven the appearance and function of the site without causing harm to the nearby designated heritage assets.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The plans can be viewed using the reference HS\/FA\/25\/00430.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Hastings Contemporary will place the studio in an open courtyard next to the gallery on Rock-a-Nore Road.
