Katherine Ryan<\/p>\n
Katherine says people who really \u201cknow\u201d her like her, but she gave up \u201cearly\u201d on being liked by everyone.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was never super likeable,\u201d Katherine says. \u201cI was aware, really young, that I was not ordinary.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe way I interacted with people was jarring, sometimes was unlikeable, was different \u2013 I would say the wrong thing.\u201d<\/p>\n
For a while, she \u201caspired to be\u201d like women who were \u201cuncomplicated and soft,\u201d doing jobs at Hooters and entering bikini pageants \u2013 but she would always \u201cslip up\u201d.<\/p>\n
Katherine\u2019s mother shared some words of wisdom which changed her perspective on everything.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy mother said, \u2018those girls aren\u2019t normal. They\u2019re ordinary\u2026 you\u2019re extraordinary. You\u2019re going to be disliked sometimes\u2026 and you should lean into that. And then I started doing comedy.\u201d<\/p>\n
Katherine\u2019s \u201cthick skin about criticism\u201d helped her when tackling tricky audiences \u2013 in one such instance, the compere was \u201capologising to the audience\u201d for bringing a woman onstage.<\/p>\n
Emma asks if Katherine has any advice for other young women who are worried about being liked.<\/p>\n
