There was a hugely poignant moment in a recent Emmerdale<\/a> episode where little Eve Dingle (Bella James) was playing in a field at Butlers and spotted her granddad, Bear Wolf<\/a> (Joshua Richards<\/a>), in a neighbouring field.\u00a0<\/p>\n Bear has been missing from home for months now, with his family totally unaware that he\u2019s been ensnared by Ray (Joe Absolom) and Celia (Jaye Griffiths<\/a>) and is working on Celia\u2019s farm along with other people in conditions of modern day slavery, being subjected to manipulation, violence and extreme hardship.\u00a0<\/p>\n The fact that his beloved granddaughter saw him<\/a>, but Paddy (Dominic Brunt<\/a>), Mandy (Lisa Riley) and the rest of the family who are desperate for some news of him didn\u2019t believe her, highlighted the huge tragedy that he\u2019s literally surrounded by people who genuinely love him, but he\u2019s completely cut off from them.\u00a0<\/p>\n Joshua Richards told us that Bear has transferred any feelings for his family to Ray, who is manipulating him the way he manipulated Dylan (Fred Kettle), by pretending to be his friend.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n \t\t \u2018Because Bear has taken himself away from the love of his son and his family, he feels somewhere within him, because he feels somewhat rejected, that Ray is a surrogate son for him,\u2019 the actor explained.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u2018He\u2019s somewhat lost and adrift. He\u2019s not really part of anybody, he\u2019s not in anybody\u2019s club or team apart from, maybe, Ray.\u2019\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n There was humanity even in the harsh conditions Bear found himself in, when he struck up a friendship with a woman called Anya (Alia Al-Shabibi).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n \u2018I think there was a glimmer of light for him but it was almost like a reminder of little Eve, his granddaughter, that an almost innocent soul was shining in the darkness and he recognised it,\u2019 Joshua reflected.\u00a0<\/p>\n That glimmer of light was soon extinguished when Anya died from an infection<\/a> as the result of wounds she received when she tried to escape. Bear\u2019s trust in Ray was severely tested when he discovered that Ray had discarded Anya\u2019s body in a feed shed.\u00a0<\/p>\n \t\t \u2018I think he\u2019s absolutely horrified, because he\u2019s been told by Ray \u2013 who he trusts with his life \u2013 that everything\u2019s fine. I think initially he gets quite angry, disappointed and somewhat saddened. But because he\u2019s been manipulated very heavily by Ray he almost forgives him,\u2019 Joshua said, explaining the way Ray manipulated Bear and the others into trusting him.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u2018It\u2019s pointing out sometimes that your previous life was absolutely dreadful and aren\u2019t things better now because you can trust me and I\u2019ll look after you. It\u2019s like giving a dog treats. It\u2019s very clever manipulation and very insidious<\/a>, that you can bit by bit instil in somebody that you\u2019re needed by the for their very existence. Ray is very successful at doing that because he has a natural charm and he has an ability to get under people\u2019s skin. \u2018\u00a0<\/p>\n Joshua told us he felt that modern day slavery was an important issue for Emmerdale to highlight and it\u2019s something he feels very strongly about.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n \t\t \u2018There are, at any given time, 400 million people in modern day slavery and it\u2019s hiding in plain sight,\u2019 he pointed out. \u2018Why the hell don\u2019t we do something about it? Like all things in this world, it\u2019s all about money. Isn\u2019t it about time we moved aside and reached out our hands and helped people?\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n As for Bear, there are no signs that he\u2019ll be rejoining his family in the village any time soon \u2013 if ever, according to Joshua.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u2018I think Bear is going through a very difficult time in his life. I think he\u2019s possibly confused, not very well and probably drug-addled and not knowing exactly where or what he\u2019s doing.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u2018I think he\u2019s too far gone at this point.
