Manchester United and their Premier League peers voted to replace the current PSR financial rules with a new system.<\/p>\n

For better or for worse, the financial landscape of the Premier League<\/a> has become an increasingly hot topic in recent years.<\/p>\n

Currently, the Premier League operates under Profit and Sustainability Rules<\/a>, which state that clubs cannot lose more than \u00a3105 million over a rolling three-year period.<\/p>\n

GRV Media\u2019s football finance expert Adam Williams<\/a> has explained that United\u2019s PSR situation<\/a> is currently okay despite spending \u00a3232m on signings in the summer.<\/p>\n

Ineos have launched \u2018Project 90\u2019<\/a> to keep the books balanced at United, and that should help as the Premier League moves into the era of squad cost ratio (SCR) era.<\/p>\n

The sale of Scott McTominay was for PSR<\/a> purposes, which is one of the many reasons fans have been against the current system.<\/p>\n

As per The Athletic<\/a>, the vote to introduce squad cost ratio rules passed 14-6, only scraping past the threshold of 14 votes. The clubs that voted against the new system were Bournemouth, Brighton, Brentford, Crystal Palace, Fulham and Leeds.<\/p>\n

That means United voted in favour of the new system. So what are squad cost ratio rules and how will they affect the Red Devils?<\/p>\n

Premier League clubs have voted to overhaul the league\u2019s financial regulations from the start of the 2026-27 season.<\/p>\n

Essentially, SCR will work on a season-to-season basis rather than a rolling three-year period.<\/p>\n

Clubs will be limited on the amount they can spend on transfer fees, player and coach wages and agent fees. This amount (squad cost) will be set to 85% of that club\u2019s revenue.<\/p>\n

United generated record revenues of \u00a3666.5m<\/a> in the latest 2024\/25 accounts. Under the new rules, that would allow the Red Devils to have spent around \u00a3566m on transfer fees, wages and agent fees.<\/p>\n

Why the new SCR rules benefit Man United<\/p>\n

The Athletic have estimated that United\u2019s squad cost for 2025\/26 is estimated to only be 57% \u2013 well below the Premier League limit of 85%.<\/p>\n

Only two Premier League clubs (Brighton and Tottenham) are spending a lower percentage of their revenue on transfer costs, wages and agent fees.<\/p>\n

Uefa have a similar model that limits clubs to spending 70% of their revenue over a calendar year. United will only have to adhere to the Uefa rules when competing in European competitions.<\/p>\n

Because United have one of the highest revenues in English football \u2013 and it is growing under Ineos \u2013 that means the Red Devils will have more flexibility to spend and improve their squad under the new rules.<\/p>\n

With a new stadium also being planned out, United\u2019s revenue should climb in years to come.<\/p>\n

The new financial rules are set to be introduced from the start of the\u00a02026-27 season.<\/p>\n
