If you&#8217;re one of the people that has more good then bad, then you&#8217;re probably getting out of class early. But, if you&#8217;ve struggled with high cholesterol at any point in your life, that lesson probably continued a bit longer than you expected. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"2\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">It is an important lesson to learn, though. The world seems to be a bit confused on what  cholesterol is\u2014especially considering now-outdated science once linked dietary cholesterol with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a26435365\/why-is-my-cholesterol-high\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a26435365\/why-is-my-cholesterol-high\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"blood cholesterol\" data-node-id=\"2.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">blood cholesterol<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"4\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Yes, they&#8217;re different things. If you&#8217;ve ever had high cholesterol, you may have also been instructed to watch how many high-cholesterol foods you eat in an attempt to bring your bad cholesterol down. But, the link between dietary cholesterol and blood cholesterol might not be what you think. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"5\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cResearch has found that eating foods with cholesterol such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/nutrition\/g38848211\/high-protein-breakfast-ideas\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/nutrition\/g38848211\/high-protein-breakfast-ideas\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"eggs\" data-node-id=\"5.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">eggs<\/a> or shrimp is not related to high blood cholesterol levels or <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26109578\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26109578\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"heart disease risk\" data-node-id=\"5.3\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">heart disease risk<\/a> for most people,&#8221; says Kelsey Lorencz, R.D.N., with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zenmasterwellness.com\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.zenmasterwellness.com\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Zenmaster Wellness\" data-node-id=\"5.5\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zenmaster Wellness<\/a>. In fact, we need both blood and dietary cholesterol to survive. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"7\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bariatricjournal.com\/advisory-board\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/bariatricjournal.com\/advisory-board\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Hector Perez\" data-node-id=\"7.0\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hector Perez<\/a>, M.D., a board-certified general and bariatric surgeon, says that cholesterol isn&#8217;t entirely bad for the body because it&#8217;s needed to help <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/heart-health\/how-its-made-cholesterol-production-in-your-body#:~:text=Cholesterol%20also%20is%20needed%20to,you%20need%20to%20stay%20healthy.\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/heart-health\/how-its-made-cholesterol-production-in-your-body#:~:text=Cholesterol%20also%20is%20needed%20to,you%20need%20to%20stay%20healthy.\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"organs function properly\" data-node-id=\"7.2\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">organs function properly<\/a>, as well as create <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a43065940\/healthy-testosterone-downloadable-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a43065940\/healthy-testosterone-downloadable-guide\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"hormones\" data-node-id=\"7.4\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">hormones<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/nutrition\/a40012434\/vitamin-d3-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/nutrition\/a40012434\/vitamin-d3-benefits\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"vitamin D\" data-node-id=\"7.6\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">vitamin D<\/a>, and digestive fluids. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">That all said, maybe your doctor has decided to recommend that you go on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a39695864\/beat-high-cholesterol-without-medication\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a39695864\/beat-high-cholesterol-without-medication\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"a low-cholesterol diet\" data-node-id=\"8.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a low-cholesterol diet<\/a> in order to protect you from heart disease, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a43714816\/stroke-vs-heart-attack-differences\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a43714816\/stroke-vs-heart-attack-differences\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"stroke\" data-node-id=\"8.3\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">stroke<\/a>, or other health problems. If this is the case, Dr. Perez says that in general \u201ca low-cholesterol diet is fairly easy to follow, and you don&#8217;t have to give up all of your favorite foods. You&#8217;ll just need to be more mindful of the foods you&#8217;re eating and make sure you&#8217;re getting enough nutrients.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Too much of anything is bad, though. If your body has a large amount of LDL cholesterol, that could lead to other health problems, he adds. \u201cLDL cholesterol is known as the \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cholesterol\/ldl_hdl.htm#:~:text=LDL%2520(low%252Ddensity%2520lipoprotein),for%2520heart%2520disease%2520and%2520stroke.\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cholesterol\/ldl_hdl.htm#:~:text=LDL%2520(low%252Ddensity%2520lipoprotein),for%2520heart%2520disease%2520and%2520stroke.\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"bad cholesterol\" data-node-id=\"9.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bad cholesterol<\/a>\u2019 because it can cause plaque to build up in the arteries, leading to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a43402644\/which-heart-tests-do-you-need\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a43402644\/which-heart-tests-do-you-need\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"heart disease\" data-node-id=\"9.3\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">heart disease<\/a> and other serious health problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"10\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">As always, you should consult with a trusted healthcare practitioner like your primary care physician or a registered dietitian to find out what\u2019s best for your individual needs and if such a nutritional regime may be good for you.  <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"11\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Ahead, learn what dietary cholesterol is, how to implement a low-cholesterol diet, and more about the misunderstood dietary substance.<\/p>\n<p>What is Dietary Cholesterol?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Dietary cholesterol is a nutrient that is &#8220;found in the tissues of animal products such as meat, poultry, dairy, eggs, and seafood,\u201d says Lorencz.  Even though the link between dietary cholesterol and heart disease risk isn&#8217;t clear, a small portion of the population may be hyper-responsive to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/g19546521\/best-and-worst-foods-your-cholesterol\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/g19546521\/best-and-worst-foods-your-cholesterol\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"cholesterol in food\" data-node-id=\"13.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cholesterol in food<\/a> and benefit from limiting this nutrient.<\/p>\n<p>Is Dietary Cholesterol the Same as Blood Cholesterol?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"15\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">No, dietary cholesterol and blood cholesterol are not the same. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"16\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Dietary cholesterol comes from food, and the relationship between how much dietary cholesterol you eat and how much cholesterol is in your blood is not exactly linear, says Perez. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"17\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">&#8220;This is because the liver makes most of the cholesterol in the body, and only a small amount comes from food,\u201d says Perez. \u201cWhen you eat less cholesterol, your liver makes more cholesterol to make up for the difference. Generally, foods with high saturated fat content should be kept to a minimum.
