That&#8217;s certainly the case for the recently deceased &#8220;other&#8221; comet ATLAS, which is slowly breaking apart after meeting its explosive end earlier this month, stunning new images reveal.<\/p>\n<p><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/theskylive.com\/c2025k1-info#google_vignette\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/theskylive.com\/c2025k1-info#google_vignette\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">C\/2025 K1 (ATLAS)<\/a> is a comet originating from the Oort Cloud beyond Neptune that was discovered in May by astronomers at the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS). It reached its closest point to the sun, or perihelion, on Oct. 8, coming within 31 million miles (50 million kilometers) of our home star. But the comet largely went under the radar until earlier this month, when it <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/comets\/theres-a-second-comet-atlas-in-our-solar-system-and-it-just-turned-gold-after-a-perilous-dance-with-the-sun\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/comets\/theres-a-second-comet-atlas-in-our-solar-system-and-it-just-turned-gold-after-a-perilous-dance-with-the-sun\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">developed a rare golden glow<\/a> in its coma and tail.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"b3a73cb8-39ad-4396-ba95-33dc84f20891-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">It has become known as the &#8220;other ATLAS,&#8221; thanks to its shared surname with the interstellar comet <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/3i-atlas\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/3i-atlas\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">3I\/ATLAS<\/a>, which has been dominating headlines since it was <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/comets\/nasa-confirms-that-mysterious-object-shooting-through-the-solar-system-is-an-interstellar-visitor-and-it-has-a-new-name\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/comets\/nasa-confirms-that-mysterious-object-shooting-through-the-solar-system-is-an-interstellar-visitor-and-it-has-a-new-name\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first spotted<\/a> shooting through the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/solar-system\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/solar-system\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar system<\/a> in July. The two comets have no relation, other than being detected by the same telescope network around the same time.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"dad45b63-5ffb-48d7-bbad-572505cd66b0\">On Nov. 13, astronomers noticed that C\/2025 K1 had <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/comets\/new-image-of-other-comet-atlas-reveals-its-breaking-apart-ahead-of-close-approach-to-earth\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/comets\/new-image-of-other-comet-atlas-reveals-its-breaking-apart-ahead-of-close-approach-to-earth\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">broken apart into several pieces<\/a>. Austrian astrophotographer <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Komet123Jager\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Komet123Jager\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Michael J\u00e4ger<\/a> has been keeping a close eye on C\/2025 K1 since it began to fall apart, and he has now shared a stunning timelapse animation that shows the fragments of the comet slowly separating from one another.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Following brightness surges in early November, we have been able to observe this comet splitting into three brighter fragments for the past two weeks,&#8221; J\u00e4ger told <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spaceweather.com\/archive.php?view=1&amp;day=24&amp;month=11&amp;year=2025\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.spaceweather.com\/archive.php?view=1&amp;day=24&amp;month=11&amp;year=2025\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Spaceweather.com<\/a>. &#8220;The animation shows it on November 12, 14, 18, 19, and 20th.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.25%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Fz2PB75VQYQ9U3jFLMdmG7.jpg\" alt=\"An orbital diagram showing the comet at its closest point to the sun\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Fz2PB75VQYQ9U3jFLMdmG7.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Fz2PB75VQYQ9U3jFLMdmG7.jpg\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>C\/2025 K1 (ATLAS) reached its closest point to the sun on Oct. 8, and got more than four times closer to our home star than 3I\/ATLAS. (Image credit: NASA\/JPL)<\/p>\n<p id=\"d38e8d8f-8aab-46e9-9184-9c890960cf8d\">The comet was not expected to survive its perihelion \u2014 astronomers predicted that the close proximity of its journey around the sun would place a huge amount of gravitational strain on the object. After its solar flyby, initial observations suggested that it had emerged unscathed. However, following a sudden brightening event, the comet then broke apart into three distinct pieces.<\/p>\n<p>More recent photos have shown that a smaller fourth fragment also splintered from the comet, according to Spaceweather.com. However, this part of the comet is not visible in the new animation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Get the world\u2019s most fascinating discoveries delivered straight to your inbox.<\/p>\n<p>C\/2025 K1 was one of just a handful of comets that have ever been seen with a golden hue (see below), which is likely the result of a surprising lack of carbon-bearing molecules, such as dicarbon, carbon monoxide and cyanide in its nucleus. In fact, only two other known comets have ever had fewer of these molecules, astronomer David Schleicher of Arizona&#8217;s Lowell Observatory <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.astronomerstelegram.org\/?read=17362\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.astronomerstelegram.org\/?read=17362\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">recently reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers had hoped to learn more about the comet and its surprising composition during its closest approach to Earth on Tuesday (Nov. 25). In fact, dozens of other comets have been found by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System \u2014 a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/nasa\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/nasa\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA<\/a>-funded robotic survey, which has been scanning the night sky using telescopes in Hawaii, South Africa and Chile since 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Over the last few years, several ATLAS comets have made the news, including <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/comets\/rare-comet-could-shine-bright-as-venus-as-it-falls-toward-the-sun-what-to-expect-from-comet-atlas-c-2024-g3\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/comets\/rare-comet-could-shine-bright-as-venus-as-it-falls-toward-the-sun-what-to-expect-from-comet-atlas-c-2024-g3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">C\/2024 G3<\/a>, which appeared in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/comets\/totally-amazing-astronaut-photo-captures-comet-c-2024-g3-atlas-shooting-past-earth-from-the-iss\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" 3I\/ATLAS, an alien comet that is traveling past us after being <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/comets\/interstellar-comet-3i-atlas-may-come-from-the-mysterious-frontier-of-the-early-milky-way-new-study-hints\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/comets\/interstellar-comet-3i-atlas-may-come-from-the-mysterious-frontier-of-the-early-milky-way-new-study-hints\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ejected from its own star system<\/a>, potentially <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/comets\/interstellar-visitor-3i-atlas-could-be-the-oldest-comet-ever-seen-and-could-grow-a-spectacular-tail-later-this-year\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/comets\/interstellar-visitor-3i-atlas-could-be-the-oldest-comet-ever-seen-and-could-grow-a-spectacular-tail-later-this-year\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">long before the solar system was born<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>3I\/ATLAS is currently on its way back out of the solar system, having <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/comets\/astronomer-reveals-first-look-at-comet-3i-atlas-as-it-reappears-from-behind-the-sun\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/comets\/astronomer-reveals-first-look-at-comet-3i-atlas-as-it-reappears-from-behind-the-sun\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reached its own perihelion on Oct. 29<\/a>, and will reach its closest point to Earth on Dec. 19, when it will reach a minimum distance of 168 million miles (270 million km) from our planet. And despite what some people claim, the astronomical community is very much in agreement that <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/extraterrestrial-life\/here-we-go-again-controversial-paper-questions-whether-interstellar-visitor-3i-atlas-is-possibly-hostile-alien-tech-in-disguise\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/extraterrestrial-life\/here-we-go-again-controversial-paper-questions-whether-interstellar-visitor-3i-atlas-is-possibly-hostile-alien-tech-in-disguise\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">it is not an alien spacecraft<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Only time will tell what wonders the future ATLAS comets will have in store for us.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"In space, death can be a beautiful thing.
