Described as the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/news\/wales-news\/butetown-cardiff-mural-news-updates-23312759\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"&quot;Mona Lisa&quot; of ButetownLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">&#8220;Mona Lisa&#8221; of Butetown<\/a>, the unmissable painting was designed to celebrate the diversity of Cardiff.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">Organised by <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/all-about\/cardiff\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Cardiff<\/a> creatives Unify, the &#8216;My City, My Shirt&#8217; mural was first painted at its original location on Bute Street in April 2021 as part of a project of the same name with the intention of encouraging more people of colour to connect with their city and football club.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">Located on the side of a three-storey building, the mural depicted Maimuna Yoncana, originally from Guinea-Bissau, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/news\/wales-news\/woman-behind-cardiffs-striking-new-20308377\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">wearing a Cardiff City shirt and cradling her baby bump<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">In October 2021, the painting was controversially <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/news\/wales-news\/butetown-mural-defaced-police-cardiff-21767172\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">defaced with white paint<\/a> prompting a police investigation a GoFundMe page to be set up to cover the costs of repairing the damage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">After the incident the mural was repainted on the opposite side of the road where it had been up until the week commencing November 17.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/0_rbp_mai070322cardiff19857JPG.jpg\" alt=\"The striking mural was inspired by a photo of Maimuna Yoncana\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The striking mural was inspired by a photo of Maimuna Yoncana(Image: WalesOnline\/ Rob Browne)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">It was also painted over in 2022 to make way for a McDonald&#8217;s advert, but after an outpouring of anger the restaurant instructed the mural&#8217;s artists to repaint it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">When the mural was first painted, Yusuf told WalesOnline that it had been inspired by his experience attending Cardiff City home games and noticing only a small handful of supporters from ethnic minorities in the stands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">Yusuf, and Shawqi Hasson, hoped that the mural would help minority communities identify with the capital, and the football club, and feel proud of their &#8220;dual heritage&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"walesonline\">Its location in Butetown symbolises that perfectly because it is situated in the oldest black community in Wales.
