James Cameron<\/a> seems to be hinting that Avatar 3<\/a> could end the series.<\/p>\n

20th Century Studios<\/a>\u2019 Avatar 3, also known as Avatar: Fire and Ash<\/a>, arrives in United States theaters next month. Directed by Cameron, the Avatar<\/a> and Avatar: The Way of Water<\/a> sequel will once again see Sam Worthington and Zoe Salda\u00f1a reprise their respective roles as Jake Sully and Neytiri.<\/p>\n

What did James Cameron say about Avatar 3 potentially ending the series?<\/p>\n

While Avatar 4 and 5 have already been announced, Cameron appeared on The Town with Matthew Belloni<\/a> podcast and suggested that it\u2019s possible Fire and Ash could be his final Avatar movie.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have no doubt in my mind that this movie will make money,\u201d Cameron said. \u201cThe question is, does it make enough money to justify doing it again?\u201d<\/p>\n

He went on to say he was \u201cabsolutely\u201d ready to walk away if the movie doesn\u2019t gross enough. He added, \u201cI\u2019ve been in Avatar land for 20 years. Actually, 30 years, because I wrote it in 95. But I wasn\u2019t working continuously on it for those first ten years. There was a brief flurry of interest in \u201995, and then everybody said you\u2019re out of your mind, and I shelved it for 10 years. Then, we got serious in 2005. Yeah, absolutely, sure. If this is where it ends, cool.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cameron said that there will be \u201cone open thread\u201d that is unresolved if Fire and Ash is the last film in the franchise; however, he also said he\u2019ll \u201cwrite a book\u201d to conclude things if that ends up being what happened.<\/p>\n

When asked if he\u2019d consider handing the franchise to someone else after Fire and Ash, Cameron initially said he would \u201cabsolutely not\u201d before commenting, \u201cI have choices there. There are levels in which I immerse. I could produce it. I don\u2019t think there\u2019d ever be a version where there\u2019s another Avatar movie that I didn\u2019t produce closely. But, in terms of it taking over my life, that\u2019s a threshold issue for me.\u201d<\/p>\n
