{"id":284771,"date":"2025-11-26T17:59:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-26T17:59:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/284771\/"},"modified":"2025-11-26T17:59:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-26T17:59:09","slug":"south-korea-launches-earth-observation-satellite-on-homegrown-nuri-rocket","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/284771\/","title":{"rendered":"South Korea launches Earth-observation satellite on homegrown Nuri rocket"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"5be3687c-9158-4186-bbce-34dc382b14e2\">South Korea&#8217;s Nuri rocket has flown for the fourth time ever.<\/p>\n<p>The homegrown <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/south-korea-nuri-rocket-launch-success\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/south-korea-nuri-rocket-launch-success\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nuri<\/a> lifted off from Naro Space Center today (Nov. 26) at 11:13 a.m. EST (1613 GMT; 0113 on Nov. 27 Korea Standard Time).<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"5be3687c-9158-4186-bbce-34dc382b14e2-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">The 155-foot-tall (47 meters) rocket carried an Earth-observation satellite called CAS500-3 and a dozen ride-along <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/34324-cubesats.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/34324-cubesats.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cubesats<\/a> to orbit.<\/p>\n<p>Best picks for you<\/p>\n<p id=\"2bcacac8-2259-48dd-85f7-fbe904c6ff6e\">If all goes to plan, CAS500-3 (&#8220;Compact Advanced Satellite 500 3)&#8221; will be deployed into a sun-synchronous orbit 373 miles (600 kilometers) above <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Once it&#8217;s up and running, the 1,100-pound (500 kilograms) satellite will study our planet&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15139-northern-lights-auroras-earth-facts-sdcmp.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15139-northern-lights-auroras-earth-facts-sdcmp.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">auroras<\/a> and another atmospheric phenomenon known as <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/earth-atmosphere-glows-gold-iss-photo\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/earth-atmosphere-glows-gold-iss-photo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">airglow<\/a>. CAS500-3 will also measure magnetic fields and plasma, according to a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kasa.go.kr\/bbs\/BBSMSTR_000000000010\/B000000002146Wf0gZ4.do?mno=sub01_01_01\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.kasa.go.kr\/bbs\/BBSMSTR_000000000010\/B000000002146Wf0gZ4.do?mno=sub01_01_01\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">statement<\/a> from the Korea Aerospace Administration (KASA), which was <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/south-korea-space-agency-mars-landing-2045\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/south-korea-space-agency-mars-landing-2045\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">established in May 2024<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The 12 rideshare cubesats were provided by a range of companies and academic and research institutions and will perform a variety of tasks in orbit.<\/p>\n<p id=\"c02c73d6-6283-4dab-b004-cdb02886f37a\">The three-stage Nuri is the first fully indigenous South Korean orbital rocket. A previous launcher, called <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19553-south-korea-launches-naro-rocket-satellite.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19553-south-korea-launches-naro-rocket-satellite.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Naro-1<\/a>, reached orbit but employed a modified Russian Angara rocket as its first stage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>Nuri failed during its debut flight in October 2021 but bounced back with two consecutive successes, in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/south-korea-nuri-rocket-launch-success\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/south-korea-nuri-rocket-launch-success\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">June 2022<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/south-korea-nuri-rocket-launch-may-2023\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/south-korea-nuri-rocket-launch-may-2023\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">May 2023<\/a>.
