{"id":286138,"date":"2025-11-27T12:53:08","date_gmt":"2025-11-27T12:53:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/286138\/"},"modified":"2025-11-27T12:53:08","modified_gmt":"2025-11-27T12:53:08","slug":"esa-and-norway-explore-possibility-of-arctic-space-centre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/286138\/","title":{"rendered":"ESA and Norway explore possibility of Arctic Space Centre"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\tAgency<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t27\/11\/2025<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t311 views<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t6 likes<\/p>\n<p>The European Space Agency has signed a letter of intent with Norway to advance\u00a0the prospect of a new ESA Arctic Space Centre to be hosted in Troms\u00f8.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Arctic is an important scientific ecosystem as well as being\u00a0significant economically and geopolitically.\u00a0It is also a region where climate change is particularly pronounced, with rates of warming\u00a0up to\u00a0four times greater than the rest of the planet.\u00a0Space-based technologies and services can help\u00a0monitor\u00a0and mitigate climate change, while also supporting sustainable development, civil safety and security and energy management in the region.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is inevitable that the Arctic region faces change \u2013 as the whole planet does \u2013 but\u00a0I\u00a0believe that space can be a positive influence for the environment and the people of the Arctic region.\u00a0There is\u00a0huge potential\u00a0for an ESA Arctic Space Centre to bring benefits to Norway, the wider Arctic region, and to the rest of Europe,&#8221;\u00a0said Simonetta Cheli, ESA Director of Earth Observation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/ESA_Multimedia\/Images\/2025\/11\/Norwegian_Minister_of_Trade_and_Industry_Cecilie_Myrseth_and_ESA_Director_General_Josef_Aschbacher_sign_letter_of_intent\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Norwegian Minister of Trade and Industry Cecilie Myrseth and ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher sign letter of intent<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Troms\u00f8\u00a0is\u00a0already home to\u00a0mission\u00a0control for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Applications\/Observing_the_Earth\/Meteorological_missions\/Arctic_Weather_Satellite\" title=\"arctic\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Arctic Weather Satellite (AWS)<\/a>.\u00a0Launched in August 2024, AWS\u00a0demonstrates\u00a0how a polar-orbiting constellation can improve short-term Arctic and global weather forecasts.\u00a0\u00a0A range of\u00a0other\u00a0scientific and technological organisations operate in\u00a0Troms\u00f8 including\u00a0the Arctic Council Secretariat,\u00a0Norwegian Polar Institute, a campus of the Arctic University of Norway,\u00a0the ESA Arctic\u00a0PhiLab\u00a0and\u00a0one of four ESA Business Incubation Centres\u00a0in Norway\u00a0as well as\u00a0several R&amp;D institutes working in marine biotechnology, medicine,\u00a0space weather\u00a0and sustainability.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>ESA and Norway, through the Norwegian Space Agency (NOSA), will now form a joint working group for experts to examine the possibilities for the ESA Arctic Space Centre.
