{"id":286687,"date":"2025-11-27T20:04:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-27T20:04:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/286687\/"},"modified":"2025-11-27T20:04:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-27T20:04:09","slug":"venezuela-bans-six-international-airlines-as-tensions-with-us-escalate-venezuela","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/286687\/","title":{"rendered":"Venezuela bans six international airlines as tensions with US escalate | Venezuela"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Venezuela has banned six international airlines, accusing them of \u201cstate terrorism\u201d after the carriers suspended flights to the country following a warning from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Venezuela\u2019s civil aviation authority announced late on Wednesday that Spain\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/iberia\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Iberia<\/a>, Portugal\u2019s Tap, Colombia\u2019s Avianca, Chile and Brazil\u2019s Latam, Brazil\u2019s Gol and Turkish Airlines would have their operational permits revoked for \u201cjoining the actions of state terrorism promoted by the United States government and unilaterally suspending air commercial operations\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Last week, the FAA warned airlines of a \u201cpotentially hazardous situation\u201d when flying over Venezuela due to a \u201cworsening security situation and heightened military activity in or around\u201d the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Caracas said the FAA had no jurisdiction over its airspace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Portuguese foreign affairs minister, Paulo Rangel, on Thursday called Venezuela\u2019s decision to revoke the airlines\u2019 operating rights \u201ctotally disproportionate\u201d. He said Portugal, where the airline Tap has its headquarters, had tried through its embassy in Caracas to persuade Venezuelan authorities to reinstate operating rights, adding Portugal had \u201cno intention of canceling our routes to Venezuela, and that, obviously, we only did so for security reasons\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The US has made its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/nov\/12\/trump-caribbean-warships-venezuela-conflict\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">largest military deployment to the Caribbean in decades<\/a> amid worsening relations with Venezuela to combat, it has claimed, the role of the president, Nicol\u00e1s Maduro, in supplying illegal drugs that have killed Americans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Maduro has denied the accusations and said Donald Trump was seeking to oust him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In a statement on Monday, the International Air Transport Association said Venezuelan authorities had given international airlines a 48-hour deadline to resume flights or risk losing their rights to fly to the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Several international airlines had cancelled flights to Venezuela in recent days, ignoring the deadline.
