{"id":286719,"date":"2025-11-27T20:28:17","date_gmt":"2025-11-27T20:28:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/286719\/"},"modified":"2025-11-27T20:28:17","modified_gmt":"2025-11-27T20:28:17","slug":"growth-and-security-at-the-forefront-in-uk-funding-boost-for-european-space-agency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/286719\/","title":{"rendered":"Growth and security at the forefront in UK funding boost for European Space Agency"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Agreed during the ESA Council of Ministers\u00a0(CM25)\u00a0in Bremen,\u00a0this new funding\u00a0brings\u00a0sharper\u00a0focus to\u00a0deliver maximum\u00a0value for money,\u00a0sustain\u00a0thousands of high-skilled jobs,\u00a0and\u00a0drive\u00a0science and\u00a0innovation that\u00a0directly benefits\u00a0people and businesses, from\u00a0increased\u00a0connectivity to more resilient\u00a0infrastructure and\u00a0public services.<\/p>\n<p>Building on existing commitments, the new funding\u00a0increases\u00a0the UK\u2019s\u00a0current\u00a0level of\u00a0support\u00a0for\u00a0ESA\u00a0programmes\u00a0to\u00a0\u00a32.8\u00a0billion\u00a0over the next decade\u00a0(2025\/26 to\u00a02034\/35),\u00a0with further commitments set to be made in 2028\u00a0at the next ESA Council of Ministers.<\/p>\n<p>This funding\u00a0returns\u00a0to UK industry and universities\u00a0as\u00a0contracts, supporting\u00a0the development of\u00a0new technologies, while\u00a0putting\u00a0British scientists,\u00a0engineers\u00a0and entrepreneurs\u00a0at the forefront of\u00a0global\u00a0space programmes.\u00a0Evaluation shows\u00a0that every \u00a31 invested in ESA returns \u00a37.49\u00a0in direct benefits\u00a0to the UK economy.<\/p>\n<p>Space Minister Liz Lloyd CBE said:<\/p>\n<p>Our space sector is a key driver of our economic growth and national\u00a0security, and\u00a0also supports our allies in Europe and beyond.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">After\u00a0these\u00a0negotiations in Bremen, during what remains a challenging time for economies across Europe, we have secured backing for our priority ESA programmes, which will support thousands of jobs, greater resilience and cutting-edge science and technology\u00a0across the UK.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/s960_ministers_CM25_gov_uk.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p>ESA Ministerial Council 2025. Credit: ESA<\/p>\n<p>The new commitments include a record\u00a0\u00a3162\u00a0million\u00a0for\u00a0launch programmes, including the European Launcher Challenge. This initiative is designed to improve access to space by\u00a0opening up\u00a0the European market to commercial operators, increasing\u00a0resilience\u00a0and driving down the cost of launching the satellites that deliver services like communications,\u00a0navigation\u00a0and weather forecasting.<\/p>\n<p>This commitment supports\u00a0the\u00a0aim\u00a0of securing\u00a0assured access to space for the UK, enhancing\u00a0our national security in an uncertain world,\u00a0and ensuring the UK benefits from the fast-growing global space market, which makes an outsized contribution to our economy.\u00a0Through these initiatives,\u00a0the government\u00a0will continue to work with launch companies that can deliver our assured access\u00a0objectives,\u00a0and\u00a0develop and strengthen existing partnerships with NATO and European allies.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0UK-led Vigil mission\u00a0to\u00a0monitor\u00a0and forecast dangerous space weather,\u00a0in partnership with\u00a0the US,\u00a0will\u00a0proceed,\u00a0with a new\u00a0\u00a3131\u00a0million\u00a0commitment\u00a0from the UK and\u00a0significant\u00a0support\u00a0from European partners.\u00a0Space\u00a0weather \u2013 which\u00a0generated\u00a0displays of the Northern Lights over parts of the UK\u00a0this month\u00a0\u2013\u00a0can disrupt\u00a0vital\u00a0technology on Earth and in space.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>These rare but extreme events\u00a0risk\u00a0impacting\u00a0our daily\u00a0lives,\u00a0damaging\u00a0power grids,\u00a0satellites,\u00a0and\u00a0satellite navigation and timing\u00a0signals\u00a0used by emergency services.\u00a0Vigil will improve forecasting of solar storms\u00a0to\u00a0help manage\u00a0these\u00a0risks\u00a0and protect national security.<\/p>\n<p>Europe\u2019s first Mars rover, built in the UK by Airbus and named after British scientist Rosalind Franklin, secured further backing in Bremen, bringing its launch a step closer in 2028. The mission will drill down into the red planet to hunt for signs of past life, putting the UK at the forefront of the race to answer one of\u00a0the\u00a0longest standing scientific questions about the potential for life to exist on other planets.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The UK also continues its support for the Argonaut lunar lander, following the award of major UK industrial contracts last week to supply the engine and propulsion sub-systems for the mission.<\/p>\n<p>High-growth programmes,\u00a0including Commercialisation,\u00a0the\u00a0General Support Technology Programme and Advanced\u00a0Research in Telecommunications Systems, share a\u00a0new\u00a0\u00a3261\u00a0million\u00a0commitment.\u00a0This includes support for a new direct-to-device satellite system that can connect directly to mobile phones, boosting connectivity\u00a0in hard-to-reach areas and during emergencies.<\/p>\n<p>A commitment\u00a0of \u00a3511\u00a0million to ESA\u2019s\u00a0core budget\u00a0backs the UK\u2019s role at the\u00a0cutting-edge\u00a0of space science. A\u00a0commitment\u00a0of \u00a3120\u00a0million\u00a0at this Ministerial\u00a0for\u00a0Earth\u00a0observation\u00a0programmes\u00a0will support mission studies and harness data from climate and environment monitoring satellites\u00a0to boost security and growth. This is in addition to\u00a0the UK\u2019s\u00a0existing\u00a0ESA commitments, meaning a total of approximately \u00a3471 million\u00a0allocated\u00a0to\u00a0ESA\u00a0Earth observation projects over the next four years. Additionally, a\u00a0new \u00a357\u00a0million investment in advanced Position, Navigation and Timing (PNT) technologies will support UK strengths in this\u00a0important area.<\/p>\n<p>Global demand for space capabilities is growing fast.\u00a0The UK\u00a0space sector employs 55,000 people, with a further 81,000 jobs in the supply chain,\u00a0and generates an annual income of \u00a318.9 billion.\u00a0More broadly, satellite services support wider industrial activities worth \u00a3454 billion to the\u00a0UK\u00a0economy, or 18% of GDP.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/s960_Paul_Minister_CM25_gov_uk.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p>UK Space Agency CEO Dr Paul Bate, and Space Minister Liz Lloyd CBE.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0government is putting greater focus on developing key\u00a0space capabilities,\u00a0and increasing access to more capital and financing options,\u00a0while\u00a0making\u00a0strategic investments in important missions through ESA, as well as\u00a0bilaterally with\u00a0wider\u00a0international partners.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Paul Bate, CEO of the UK Space Agency,\u00a0said:<\/p>\n<p>With\u00a0a\u00a0sharper\u00a0focus\u00a0and\u00a0more\u00a0coordinated\u00a0approach to space\u00a0across\u00a0government, we\u00a0entered\u00a0these\u00a0important\u00a0negotiations with\u00a0clear\u00a0priorities,\u00a0and\u00a0delivered\u00a0against them.\u00a0But\u00a0what\u2019s\u00a0even more important\u00a0is how we worked\u00a0as a team \u2013 government, industry, academia\u00a0\u2013 to deliver\u00a0the capabilities in space that our country needs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">I\u2019d\u00a0like to put on record my thanks to everyone in the UK space sector for all the work they do, day-in day-out, and to all those who supported these important negotiations.\u00a0Now the real work begins to translate these commitments into\u00a0valuable\u00a0contract wins for\u00a0the sector.<\/p>\n<p>As well as ESA programmes, the UK\u00a0space sector\u00a0has access to a wider range of national space funding than ever before.\u00a0This year\u00a0the government increased\u00a0the\u00a0core civil space budget through the UK Space Agency by 8%\u00a0and announced a further \u00a32.8 billion\u00a0over the coming four years (2026\/27 to 2029\/30).
