Victoria Derbyshire challenged a Tory shadow minister on Newsnight following her criticism of Rachel Reeves\u2019 budget<\/a>, reminding her of her party\u2019s record with the economy. <\/p>\n

On Wednesday the chancellor gave one of the most chaotic Budgets<\/a> in recent memory.<\/p>\n

With a \u00a320bn financial black hole to fill, the chancellor confirmed \u00a326bn in tax increases, which included a \u2018mansion tax\u2019<\/a>, a new mileage tax on electric vehicles and taxes on private pension savings.<\/p>\n

Reeves also announced a the two-child benefit cap would be scrapped, and\u00a0the government\u2019s fiscal headroom will expand to \u00a322bn in five years\u2019 time.<\/p>\n

The Conservatives haven\u2019t held back in their criticism of the budget, with Kemi Badenoch labelling it a \u2018budget for Benefits Street.\u2019<\/p>\n

During an appearance on Newsnight on Wednesday, shadow business minister Harriett Baldwin was also critical of Reeves. <\/p>\n

She said the government have raised taxes \u201cat the slightest whiff of trouble,\u201d hitting out at them for not \u201cgetting the welfare bill under control.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was at this point that Derbyshire reminded Baldwin of her party\u2019s failure on these very matters, pointing out that under the Tories welfare spending and taxes went up. <\/p>\n

\u201cWelfare spending went up, you raised taxes 20 times in the last parliament, you added \u00a31.5 trillion to national debt over 14 years, and there was pretty anaemic growth,\u201d she told the shadow minister. <\/p>\n
