The Piccadilly Radio 261 text and logo adorns the outside window behind him.\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hLdNfA\"\/>Piccadilly Radio<\/p>\n<p>Philip Birch founded Piccadilly Radio in Manchester after managing pirate station Radio London<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">One morning in April 1974, Good Vibrations by The Beach Boys was faded up and with it &#8211; the birth of Manchester&#8217;s newest radio station. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Piccadilly Radio 261 went on to become a Mancunian institution and one of the most popular news, music and entertainment radio stations in the UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The city&#8217;s first independent radio station, which joined the airwaves four years after BBC Radio Manchester, helped launch the careers of broadcasters <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cq5zx32163po\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 iCaRzc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Andy Peebles<\/a>, Chris Evans, Susie Mathis and <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sounds\/brand\/p001d7x3\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 iCaRzc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">BBC Radio Manchester&#8217;s Becky Want<\/a> and <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sounds\/brand\/p0195t4s\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 iCaRzc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mike Sweeney<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">In 1988, after 14 years of news, sport, phone-ins and competitions, Piccadilly Radio split into Key 103 &#8211; later becoming Hits and Greatest Hits Radio, both based in the city&#8217;s Castlefield area. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Several of Piccadilly&#8217;s former presenters recently reunited to unveil a commemorative plaque at the site of the original studios, recalling stories of how the station became a &#8220;bright light&#8221; during a &#8220;pretty grim time&#8221; for the city.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1764383708_858_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 gUePlo hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/5fec7a00-cd01-11f0-b6c9-cfd3a9666535.png.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Piccadilly Radio Pete Baker sits behind the mixing desk wearing a white shirt. He has headphones around his neck.\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hLdNfA\"\/>Piccadilly Radio<\/p>\n<p>Pete Baker, whose son Richard wrote this story, presenting Piccadilly Radio&#8217;s breakfast show<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">When Piccadilly Radio came on air, the country was in the midst of political strife, a <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b03mcklz\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 iCaRzc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">three-day working week<\/a> and energy shortages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Factories and schools closed, families ate by candlelight and television channels went dark at 22:30 GMT.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;We&#8217;re talking about 1974, which was pretty grim frankly, it almost meant we didn&#8217;t even get on air&#8221;, Piccadilly Radio&#8217;s first employee Jim Hancock remembered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;Piccadilly came as this bright light on the scene.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Tony Ingham, who helped set up the station, said only &#8220;one-and-a-half&#8221; of their four studios were ready for launch day on 2 April 1974.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;There wasn&#8217;t any heating, the presenters had maybe two weeks to rehearse,&#8221; he explained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;Everything was held together with Sellotape and string initially.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1764383708_858_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 gUePlo hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/938a4860-cd01-11f0-b6c9-cfd3a9666535.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Piccadilly Radio Screenshot of Mike Shaft's presenter card at Piccadilly. He's looking into the camera and is wearing a white v-neck jumper.\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hLdNfA\"\/>Piccadilly Radio<\/p>\n<p>Mike Shaft&#8217;s presenter card from Piccadilly Radio<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">While his future colleagues were helping build the remaining studios, across the city a young Mike Shaft was listening to Andy Peebles&#8217; soul show. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;All I wanted to do was the soul show,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;I said to my missus &#8216;I&#8217;ll never work at Piccadilly whilst Andy&#8217;s there because his soul show was just excellent&#8217;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Shaft, who eventually took the reins of the &#8220;Taking Care of Business&#8221; soul show until 1986, remembered the day he realised a window may be open.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;I opened up the Daily Mail, it read &#8216;Andy Peebles Goes To Radio 1&#8217; &#8211; I was down there within 30 minutes!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The aspiring presenter soon received a letter, inviting him in for a chat. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;Me and my missus were both jumping around in our flat, it was great times,&#8221; he remembered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">After Piccadilly, Shaft worked at BBC Radio Manchester for 20 years, presenting his final Sunday Breakfast show in 2022.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1764383708_858_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 gUePlo hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/c194a110-cd01-11f0-b6c9-cfd3a9666535.png.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Piccadilly Radio Tony sits with his leg up on the table wearing a bright red shirt and pinstripe navy suit trousers. There is a woman to the left of the picture with mousy brown hair and a black top on. \" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hLdNfA\"\/>Piccadilly Radio<\/p>\n<p>Tony Ingham later became programme controller at Piccadilly Radio<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Piccadilly Radio also reported on Manchester&#8217;s vibrant and varied sporting scene &#8211; under its &#8220;First with News; First with Sport&#8221; tagline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">When the station covered Manchester City versus Liverpool in the 1981 League Cup semi-final, Ingham was asked to think of an idea to show off Piccadilly&#8217;s sponsorship of the tie.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;Two nights before the game, we went to assess whether we could send fireworks off above the stands in the event of a City goal,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;On the way back to the studios, we were arrested by armed police who thought we&#8217;d set a bomb off. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;I spent two hours in Moss Side police station under the Prevention of Terrorism Act!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1764383708_858_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 gUePlo hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/ea4cd2d0-cd01-11f0-b6c9-cfd3a9666535.png.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Pete Johnson Jim Hancock stands in front of the camera and smiles.
