The FBI has just issued a stark <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ic3.gov\/PSA\/2025\/PSA251125\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.ic3.gov\/PSA\/2025\/PSA251125\" aria-label=\"new warning\">new warning<\/a> as cyber criminals gain access to customer bank accounts, The bureau says these attackers have already stolen $262 million this year, with the threat likely to get worse over the holidays.<\/p>\n<p>Some of these attacks come at you by <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2025\/08\/12\/fbi-warning-do-not-reply-to-these-texts-on-your-smartphone\/\" data-ga-track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2025\/08\/12\/fbi-warning-do-not-reply-to-these-texts-on-your-smartphone\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"text\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">text<\/a> or <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2025\/11\/17\/gmail-and-outlook-warning-do-not-open-any-of-these-pdfs\/\" data-ga-track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2025\/11\/17\/gmail-and-outlook-warning-do-not-open-any-of-these-pdfs\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"email\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">email<\/a>, tricking you into sharing one-time passcodes or even your actual password. \u201cThe cyber criminal then uses login credentials to log into the legitimate financial institution website and initiate a password reset, ultimately gaining full control of the accounts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the new advisory flags phone calls as the most serious risk. \u201cBe suspicious of unknown \u2018banking\u2019 or \u2018company\u2019 employees who call you,\u201d the FBI  warns. \u201cDon\u2019t trust caller ID. Hang up, verify the correct number, and call it yourself. Companies generally do not contact you to ask for your username, password, or OTP.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"embed-base color-body color-body-border link-embed embed-4\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2025\/11\/29\/if-you-get-this-whatsapp-message-your-phone-is-being-hacked\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"If You Get This WhatsApp Message, Your Phone Is Being Hacked\" data-ga-track=\"forbesEmbedly:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2025\/11\/29\/if-you-get-this-whatsapp-message-your-phone-is-being-hacked\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ForbesIf You Get This WhatsApp Message, Your Phone Is Being HackedBy Zak Doffman<\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are a range of other ways in which one of these attacks may target you \u2014 including manipulating search engine results to have a fake login page appear ahead of real pages in the results. That way, even if you hang up a call and search for a legitimate website, you could be fooled into accessing the wrong one.<\/p>\n<p>The lures being users for attacks can vary, but they\u2019re likely to include a <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2025\/09\/30\/fbi-warning-all-smartphone-users-must-stop-these-calls\/\" data-ga-track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2025\/09\/30\/fbi-warning-all-smartphone-users-must-stop-these-calls\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"sense of urgency\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">sense of urgency<\/a> to force you into acting before you have time to think. Fraudulent transactions, hijacked accounts or stolen passwords are always good entry points for an attack.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce the impersonators have access and control of the accounts,\u201d the bureau says, \u201cthe cyber criminals quickly wire funds to other criminal-controlled accounts, many of which are linked to cryptocurrency wallets.\u201d An attacker might also \u201cchange the online account password, locking the owner out of their own financial account(s).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you have fallen victim to any such attack, or if you have shared information or logged into an account using a website you now think may have been fake, contact your bank and explain the situation. And change your online passwords.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cContact your financial institution as soon as fraud is recognized to request a recall or reversal as well as a Hold Harmless Letter or Letter of Indemnity,\u201d the FBI says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRequesting a recall and obtaining a Hold Harmless Letter\/indemnification documents as quickly as possible may reduce or eliminate your financial losses.\u201d Citizens are also urged to \u201cimmediately report fraudulent wire transfers to both to your financial institution and to the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ic3.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.ic3.gov\/\" aria-label=\"www.ic3.gov\">www.ic3.gov<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whilst this FBI warning focuses on financial institutions, we\u2019re also seeing new attacks pretending to be technical support \u2014 impersonating <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2025\/11\/22\/apple-warns-all-iphone-users-do-not-take-these-calls\/\" data-ga-track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2025\/11\/22\/apple-warns-all-iphone-users-do-not-take-these-calls\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Apple\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Apple<\/a> or <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2025\/08\/31\/if-you-see-this-number-on-your-phone-your-gmail-is-under-attack\/\" data-ga-track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2025\/08\/31\/if-you-see-this-number-on-your-phone-your-gmail-is-under-attack\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Google\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Google<\/a> or others. The same rules apply. Do not engage. Hang up. Contact the company using their usual means, or ideally log into your account via an app and check for any messages.<\/p>\n<p>In response to the FBI\u2019s account takeover warning, <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bitdefender.com\/en-gb\/blog\/hotforsecurity\/fbi-scammers-posing-bank-how-to-protect-your-account\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.bitdefender.com\/en-gb\/blog\/hotforsecurity\/fbi-scammers-posing-bank-how-to-protect-your-account\" aria-label=\"Bitdefender\">Bitdefender<\/a> has published findings from surveying users in multiple countries, including the U.S. \u201c1 in 7 consumers (~14 %) reported falling victim to a scam in the past year,\u201d it says. \u201cThe most common scams encountered are delivery, shipping and mail fraud (21%) followed by credential phishing and account takeover (19%) \u2013 the type the FBI highlights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bitdefender says that while \u201csocial media has overtaken email as the primary vector,\u201d it has found that \u201c25% of scams now happen over the phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the FBI\u2019s latest alert focuses on cyber criminals mimicking financial organizations to trick their customers into giving away account details, there\u2019s another dangerous impersonation scam the bureau has flagged that\u2019s now surging again.<\/p>\n<p>Several local police forces in the U.S. are again warning (<a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kxly.com\/news\/chelan-county-warns-residents-of-phone-scam-using-deputies-names\/article_732ee9da-435a-40f3-9436-4215195f4d25.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.kxly.com\/news\/chelan-county-warns-residents-of-phone-scam-using-deputies-names\/article_732ee9da-435a-40f3-9436-4215195f4d25.html\" aria-label=\"1\">1<\/a>,<a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.malwarebytes.com\/blog\/news\/2025\/11\/holiday-shoppers-targeted-as-amazon-and-fbi-warn-of-surge-in-account-takeover-attacks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.malwarebytes.com\/blog\/news\/2025\/11\/holiday-shoppers-targeted-as-amazon-and-fbi-warn-of-surge-in-account-takeover-attacks\" aria-label=\"2\">2<\/a>,<a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/6abc.com\/post\/gloucester-township-police-department-warns-fake-cop-phone-call-scam\/18209516\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/6abc.com\/post\/gloucester-township-police-department-warns-fake-cop-phone-call-scam\/18209516\/\" aria-label=\"3\">3<\/a>) that citizens are being called by individuals pretending to be officers. Many of these calls even spoof real police numbers to make the lures even more convincing. These scams are not confined to state and local police. Federal agencies \u2014 <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/FBICleveland\/status\/1929514638573449703?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/x.com\/FBICleveland\/status\/1929514638573449703?s=20\" aria-label=\"including the FBI\">including the FBI<\/a> \u2014 have also been spoofed.<\/p>\n<p>The <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/consumer.ftc.gov\/consumer-alerts\/2025\/06\/scammers-are-impersonating-local-law-enforcement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/consumer.ftc.gov\/consumer-alerts\/2025\/06\/scammers-are-impersonating-local-law-enforcement\" aria-label=\"FTC\">FTC<\/a> explains \u201cthe call comes from someone claiming they\u2019re a sheriff or deputy at your local police department.&#8221; They say &#8220;you\u2019ll be arrested unless you pay a fine. To avoid being arrested, they might tell you to send cash, deposit money at a Bitcoin ATM, buy gift cards and give them the numbers, or send money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are many versions of the impersonation scam,&#8221; <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2025\/06\/08\/fbi-warns-iphone-and-android-users-do-not-take-these-calls\/\" data-ga-track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2025\/06\/08\/fbi-warns-iphone-and-android-users-do-not-take-these-calls\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"the FBI says\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the FBI says<\/a>, and they all exploit intimidation tactics. It\u2019s a scammer trying to steal your money.
