{"id":289901,"date":"2025-11-29T15:29:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-29T15:29:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/289901\/"},"modified":"2025-11-29T15:29:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-29T15:29:09","slug":"why-there-is-a-giant-model-of-mars-in-bolton-library","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/289901\/","title":{"rendered":"Why there is a giant model of Mars in Bolton Library"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  If you attended Bolton\u2019s Put Big Light On festival this year, you may have caught a glimpse of the seven-metre sculpture of Mars in Bolton Central Library.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The artwork features detailed NASA imagery of the Martian surface.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Scaled down to about one millionth of Mars\u2019s true size, the glowing sphere turns every centimetre into 10 kilometres of the planet\u2019s surface.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The piece offers a bird\u2019s-eye perspective of the Red Planet, as if you were orbiting in a satellite and charting its rugged terrain.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  From craters and valleys to towering volcanoes and mountains, the landscape is revealed in striking detail.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The installation immerses viewers in a barren, desert-like world, sparking the imagination of what it would be like to stand on the surface of Mars.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  But this isn\u2019t the first time Jerram\u2019s work has wowed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theboltonnews.co.uk\/news\/25592378.submissions-open-boltons-2026-open-art-exhibition\/?ref=ed_direct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bolton residents<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  In 2023, his Museum of the Moon, a seven-metre sculpture featuring NASA imagery of the lunar surface, was part of the light festival.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Last year, Gaia, showcasing Earth\u2019s surface, visited Bolton for the same <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theboltonnews.co.uk\/news\/25638382.popular-christmas-market-returns-garden-centre-weekend\/?ref=ed_direct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">event<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Perhaps next year, Jerram\u2019s sculpture of the Sun, Helios, will make an appearance.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>Helios, in the Ball Room at Bath Assembly Rooms (Image: (Ben Birchall\/PA))\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Read more:\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>Mars pictured by Henry Lisowski at Put Big Light On 2025 (Image: Henry Lisowski)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Jerram\u2019s creations blend engineering and art, resulting in awe-inspiring pieces that tour the globe.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Based in Bristol, he stages over 100 exhibitions in around 30 countries each year.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  His large-scale sculptures are not only works of art but also serve as venues, encouraging events and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theboltonnews.co.uk\/news\/25585873.archery-climbing-singing-centres-first-send-fun-day\/?ref=ed_direct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">gatherings<\/a> beneath them.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  For those wishing to experience Mars, visit Bolton Library during opening hours or attend one of the scheduled events.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Saturday, Nov 29 &#8211;
