Plymouth fighter Constantin Ursu will be taking nothing for granted when he comes up against Ryan Amos for the WBO European welterweight title at London\u2019s York Hall on Sunday (Nov 30), according to his trainer.<\/p>\n
Ursu has also put his Commonwealth Gold strap on the line for the contest at Bethnal Green, which is the headline clash on Top Tier\u2019s Resurgence show \u2013 and also streamed live on DAZN.<\/p>\n
But in the build-up to the clash, the British Boxing Board of Control put out a call for purse bids for Ursu\u2019s clash against Conah Walker for the British title.<\/p>\n
That clash has been mandated to take place before the end of March next year, and will be unaffected by this weekend’s outcome.<\/p>\n
But Ursu\u2019s trainer Marlee Dann said that his protege will be looking no further than his opponent this weekend.<\/p>\n
He told The Herald: \u201cConstantin isn\u2019t looking past Ryan Amos \u2013 he knows full well that Ryan is a capable fighter and Constantin is an extremely professional boxer, he lives his life according to what it is to be a professional.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn my view Constantin\u2019s mindset and dedication to the sport will show through in his performance and Constantin\u2019s maturity certainly over the last couple of years has been incredible.<\/p>\n
\u201cEither myself or the team, we\u2019re not looking past Ryan in any way shape or form.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dann said winning the WBO European title would be a unprecedented achievement for not just Ursu but the region.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a fantastic step defending the Commonwealth Gold and going for a European title which has never been done in Devon and Cornwall\u2019s history,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe [Ursu] has been fantastic and he\u2019s had the best camp that I think we\u2019ve ever had \u2013 he\u2019s had great sparring, it\u2019s been very good on all aspects really.\u201d<\/p>\n
For Amos, it is the opportunity to inflict a first defeat on the \u2018Moldovan Monster\u2019 \u2013 as Ursu has been dubbed \u2013 as well as securing a European title.<\/p>\n
Dann acknowledge that the Northampton man comes into the clash with only two defeats in a 20-fight professional career, and cannot be underestimated.<\/p>\n
Dann said: \u201cRyan [Amos] has boxed most of his career at middleweight and super welter \u2013 on his whole record he\u2019s been very solid.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s got a great style as a professional and I think he comes from the beginning to the final bell, and is tight and compact, and applies the pressure pretty well.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve just been drafting in sparring partners for Ryan and we\u2019ve done nothing majorly different to what we normally do, but we\u2019ve changed the sparring partners for who Ryan is.\u201d<\/p>\n
With Ursu featuring heavily on the promotional material for DAZN\u2019s weekend streaming, Dann said it is another opportunity to raise his public profile.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople in the sport know who Constantin is,\u201d he said. \u201cSo it\u2019s just down to the public to catch on and the promoter to take him to the next level.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut he is a well known figure in boxing now which is good.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dann also has recently-acquired Olympian Tiago Muxanga on the undercard at York Hall, with a clash against Southampton scrapper Harley Collison.<\/p>\n
Collison has been drafted in after Muxanga\u2019s previously arranged opponent ran into issues with his visa.<\/p>\n
But the Southampton-based fighter is known for not taking a backward step and will be a decent foil for Mozambique-raised Muxanga, now also training under Dann in Honicknowle\u2019s Intense ABC gym.<\/p>\n
Dann said: \u201cWe had an opponent with a great record, but they\u2019ve had visa issues getting him over, he was from Indonesia and his record had about 30-35 wins.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut we had issues with a visa and Johnny [Clark] said \u2018do we get in a journeyman?\u2019 and I said \u2018I don\u2019t think we need that\u2019 and he said he agreed.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s come from the Olympics, clearly a very capable fighter, what is the need in taking a backward step and going to a journeyman?\u201d<\/p>\n
He continued: \u201cIf you look at Collison\u2019s record it is quite interesting \u2013 he fought a guy called Caoimhin Agyarko from Ireland, who is 18-0 and is signed to Matchroom and Queensberry is a very capable man.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey actually boxed on the undercard of Constantin\u2019s fight against Eithan James so I have watched Harley up close and I can assure you that he comes to win.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s got a fight in him and he\u2019s proud, and some of the opponents he\u2019s had, they are decent.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor us Collison is a very capable fighter and most of his fights recently have been a bit heavier \u2013 he\u2019s been taking fights at heavier weight categories, but he is a 154lb fighter and it will be at 154lb on Sunday, so for us it\u2019s a very simple thing.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s been in with big strong guys, and he\u2019s never been stopped, he\u2019s been put down once or twice but he\u2019s always got back up and come back fighting.<\/p>\n
