{"id":291941,"date":"2025-11-30T19:57:22","date_gmt":"2025-11-30T19:57:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/291941\/"},"modified":"2025-11-30T19:57:22","modified_gmt":"2025-11-30T19:57:22","slug":"international-cricketer-jailed-after-attacking-woman-and-stealing-phone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/291941\/","title":{"rendered":"International cricketer jailed after attacking woman and stealing phone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A World Cup cricketer has been jailed for three years after following a woman and stealing her phone in an attempt to help pay off a \u00a31,000 loan.<\/p>\n<p>Papua New Guinea international Kipling Doriga pleaded guilty to one charge of robbery in the Royal Court yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The court heard he had decided to pursue his victim after seeing her leaving a nightclub and putting a mobile phone in her handbag.<\/p>\n<p id=\"article_6-1_fb_5\">The 30-year-old had been in Jersey to compete for his country in the International Cricket Council Challenge League, a global tournament which forms part of the qualification process for the 2027 Cricket World Cup.<\/p>\n<p id=\"article_6-1_fb_6\">Having been held in custody since the incident on Monday 25 August, Doriga is now set to serve the remainder of his sentence at HMP La Moye before being deported.<\/p>\n<p>Crown Advocate Emma Hollywood, prosecuting,\u00a0explained that the victim had been walking home at around 2am after a night out, when she became aware that someone was following her. <\/p>\n<p>Her pursuer, later identified as Doriga, caught up with her in Hilary Street. She screamed at him to leave her alone and slapped him. <\/p>\n<p>Doriga responded by striking her twice, with the second blow knocking her to the ground, before grabbing her handbag and fleeing.<\/p>\n<p>Her bag was later found nearby without her mobile phone. <\/p>\n<p>Using a tracking app, the victim traced the device to the hotel where the Papua New Guinea team were staying. <\/p>\n<p>Police attended and arrested Doriga, who admitted he had been drunk and decided to steal the phone to sell it and put money towards a \u00a31,000 debt. <\/p>\n<p>He estimated he could have made around \u00a3400 from the sale.<\/p>\n<p>The court has a duty to ensure the streets of St Helier are safe and to signal that this sort of offending will not be tolerated<\/p>\n<p>the Bailiff, Robert MacRae<\/p>\n<p>In a statement read to the court, the victim said the assault had left her traumatised, experiencing flashbacks, panic attacks and ongoing pain. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have lost my sense of safety in the very community where I grew up,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s something that I will carry with me long after the physical bruises fade.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Advocate Julia-Anne Dix, defending, said Doriga lived an \u201cextremely basic\u201d life and supported his family on a \u00a3285 monthly cricket salary. <\/p>\n<p>She said he felt deep shame, knowing the incident would cost him his sporting career, and accepted the harm he caused. <\/p>\n<p>The assault, she added, was inexcusable and completely out of character.<\/p>\n<p>Presiding over the sentencing hearing, the Bailiff, Robert MacRae, said the case was so serious that custody was the only justifiable outcome.<\/p>\n<p id=\"article_6-1_fb_22\">\u201cYou targeted a lone woman, followed her and when you felt it was safe for you to do so you attacked her and stole her phone,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"article_6-1_fb_23\">\u201cThe court has a duty to ensure the streets of St Helier are safe and to signal that this sort of offending will not be tolerated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"article_6-1_fb_24\">Mr MacRae, who was presiding with Jurats Opfermann and Gardener, said the court was jailing Doriga for three years and recommended that he be deported from the Island after completing his sentence.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tRelated<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A World Cup cricketer has been jailed for three years after following a woman and stealing her phone&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":291942,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[34],"tags":[1721,118237,101,56,54,55],"class_list":{"0":"post-291941","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-cricket","8":"tag-cricket","9":"tag-expresso-jsy","10":"tag-sports","11":"tag-uk","12":"tag-united-kingdom","13":"tag-unitedkingdom"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/291941","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=291941"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/291941\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/291942"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=291941"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=291941"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=291941"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
