While many of the key crew on Marvel Studios\u2019 upcoming \u201cAvengers: Doomsday\u201d are returnees from past Marvel Studios efforts like Endgame\u2019s editor Jeffrey Ford and composer Alan Silvestri, there\u2019s also some new faces.<\/p>\n

One is cinematographer Newton Thomas Sigel, who worked on Fox\u2019s \u201cX-Men: Days of Future Past\u201d and with the Russos on films like \u201cExtraction\u201d and \u201cCherry\u201d, but hasn\u2019t done an MCU film before.<\/p>\n

Another is the movie\u2019s production designer Gavin Bocquet, who served as production designer on George Lucas\u2019 \u201cStar Wars\u201d prequel trilogy, the young \u201cIndiana Jones\u201d series and films like \u201cStardust,\u201d \u201cWarcraft,\u201d \u201cThe Bank Job,\u201d and most recently on Apple TV series \u201cSilo\u201d.<\/p>\n

Bocquet is an old school production designer and in a new interview with YouTube channel Young Indy Chroniclers<\/a>, he reveals he\u2019s bringing some of that expertise to the new film. The result is a lot more in-camera set design and practical effects where possible:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had a lot of sets with backings outside them, physical backings, and generally the default situation previous to us was probably let\u2019s put a blue screen out there and do that.<\/p>\n

But wherever possible, we either had a Rosco backing that we created ourselves or a painted backing on, I thin, 80% of interior sets\u2026 with backings. Then it was all in camera, you know, and in the end that\u2019s as much a visual thing as a money thing, you know, if they don\u2019t have to change the exterior.<\/p>\n

So wherever we could, we\u2019re bringing that bit of experience in just to adjust those things and not just presume you can always put it in in visual effects. You know, filmmaking is the art of illusion, and if we can do it physically\u2026 and Joe and Anthony really like that. We can only do it in certain instances, by [the] nature of these films and the characters in them and the environments you\u2019re doing. But, wherever possible, why not try those things?\u201d<\/p>\n
