{"id":293228,"date":"2025-12-01T15:30:15","date_gmt":"2025-12-01T15:30:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/293228\/"},"modified":"2025-12-01T15:30:15","modified_gmt":"2025-12-01T15:30:15","slug":"ozempic-style-drugs-should-be-available-to-all-not-just-the-rich-says-who-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/293228\/","title":{"rendered":"Ozempic-style drugs should be available to all, not just the rich, says WHO \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The WHO wants pharma companies to consider tiered pricing (lower prices in lower-income countries) and voluntary licensing of patents and technology to allow other producers around the word to manufacture GLP-1s, to help expand access to these drugs.<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy Farrar, an assistant director general at the WHO, told POLITICO the guidelines would also give an \u201camber and green light\u201d to generic drugmakers to produce cheaper versions of GLP-1s when the patents expire.<\/p>\n<p>Francesca Celletti, a senior adviser on obesity at the WHO, told POLITICO \u201cdecisive action\u201d was needed to expand access to GLP-1s, citing the example of antiretroviral HIV drugs earlier this century. \u201cWe all thought it was impossible \u2026 and then the price went down,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Key patents on semaglutide, the ingredient in Novo Nordisk\u2019s diabetes and weight-loss drugs Ozempic and Wegovy, will lift in some countries next year, including India, Brazil and China.<\/p>\n<p>Indian generics giant Dr. Reddy\u2019s plans to launch a generic semaglutide-based weight-loss drug in 87 countries in 2026, its CEO Erez Israeli said earlier this year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/healthcare-pharmaceuticals\/indias-dr-reddys-plans-launch-generic-obesity-drugs-87-countries-next-year-ceo-2025-07-23\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">reported Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;U.S. and Europe will open later &#8230; (and) all the other Western markets will be open between 2029 to 2033,&#8221; Israeli told reporters after the release of quarterly earnings in July.<\/p>\n<p>Prices should fall once generics are on the market, but that isn\u2019t the only barrier. Injectable drugs, for example, need cold chain storage.
