Peter Kay<\/a> has lifted the lid on his long-running battle with weight<\/a> in a revealing new chat with Sara Cox \u2014 admitting he only truly tackled it when he \u201cstarted thinking about [his] health<\/a>\u201d. The comedian, now deep into another blockbuster tour, sat down with Sara on BBC Radio 2<\/a> to promote his new book and opened up about years of struggling with diets, gyms and failed routines. And while fans have recently praised him for looking healthier than ever, Peter didn\u2019t shy away from the less glamorous truth behind it.<\/p>\n

When Sara asked if he\u2019d ever seriously tried to slim down, the beloved comic<\/a>, 52, didn\u2019t skip a beat: \u201cOnly for the first 48 years of my life. Yeah, I had to eventually, because you start thinking about your health<\/a> and things like that, don’t you? But I tried everything, flaming weight loss groups. I did quite well at one point.\u201d<\/p>\n

He then launched into one of the hilariously bleak memories from his book \u2014 a night at the cinema in 2000 with his wife, Susan, that sent his diet spiralling. He confessed: \u201cI once went to watch The Green Mile with Susan at the cinema in Bolton\u2026 I said, \u2018Susan, I’m going to the toilet\u2019.<\/p>\n

“So I nipped out, bought a hotdog\u2026 I had this hot dog, and I am shoving it in\u2026 I caught a glimpse of myself. I thought, \u2018Look at you, you should be ashamed of yourself,\u2019 and I threw the rest of it in the bin. And just as it was about to hit the bin liner, I grabbed it and had another bite!\u201d<\/p>\n

When he returned to his seat, Susan immediately rumbled him: \u201cAnyway, I went back in and ran up and sat back down and said, \u2018What have I missed?\u2019. She said, \u2018You have had a hot dog\u2019, and I said, \u2018I have not\u2019, and she said, \u2018I can smell it on your breath\u2019. That’s how bad it was, honest to God.<\/p>\n

Peter admitted his fitness attempts weren\u2019t much more successful. He joked about sweating through a Rosemary Connolly video \u2014 only for the instructor to announce the warm-up had just ended \u2014 and recalled signing up for a Bolton gym before quickly retreating to the pool.<\/p>\n

He joked: \u201cYou know why I stopped going? Men just talking to you naked.\u201d Still chasing motivation, he joined high-energy aerobics with a \u201ctwo-litre bottle of Tizer\u201d, before ending up at a hardcore old-school gym in Manchester: \u201cA lad ran this gym, he had me pulling a tyre outside\u2026 I\u2019d go and sit in the toilet and sob because it was like proper old school.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite all that, Peter\u2019s determination stuck. His Better Late Than Never tour is now extended well into 2026, with proceeds from next year\u2019s final shows going to 12 cancer charities. \u201cUnfortunately, everybody knows someone who’s been affected\u2026 and I just hope people support it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Kay told Sara he\u2019d been fortunate to meet every comedian he admired: \u201cI have been really lucky because I have met them all. “I met Ronnie Barker\u2026 he wrote back to me in character as Norman Fletcher from \u2018Her Majesty\u2019s Prison Slade\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also shared concern for Billy Connolly: \u201cI met Billy Connolly as well\u2026 he\u2019s not so good now\u2026 I think so much of it is influenced by him\u2026 Amazing.\u201d Peter Kay’s Diary: The Monthly Memoir Of A Boy from Bolton is out now.
