{"id":294556,"date":"2025-12-02T08:49:07","date_gmt":"2025-12-02T08:49:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/294556\/"},"modified":"2025-12-02T08:49:07","modified_gmt":"2025-12-02T08:49:07","slug":"widower-urges-personalised-pain-relief-for-palliative-care-patients","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/294556\/","title":{"rendered":"Widower urges personalised pain relief for palliative care patients"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Northern Ireland has four main hospices including NI Hospice, Evora Hospice, Foyle Hospice and Marie Curie Hospice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">There are also inpatient and specialist palliative care services in the five regional health trusts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">At present 30% of hospice services are government-funded with the rest coming from fundraising.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Campaigners have said that nothing short of 100% funding for their actual care costs including all specialist beds should be considered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The cost of running one hospital bed is approximately \u00a3600,000 per year due to specialist nurses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">But demand is increasing with projections that the need for palliative care will rise by 57% before 2040.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Hospice cares for around 12,000 people each year with 70% of patients dying at home. That equates to around 17,000 nights of dedicated care provided by specialist staff in patients&#8217; homes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Data also shows that 25% of hospital admissions are in their last year of life and would benefit from specialist services in the community rather than in hospital.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Northern Ireland has four main hospices including NI Hospice, Evora Hospice, Foyle Hospice and Marie Curie Hospice.
