Billy Davies is not in the running to become the next Morton manager.

The current Cappielow Technical Head Coach is part of the interim management team but doesn’t want to be considered for the role on a permanent basis. The Morton board has received a number of applicants and will start the process of appointing their next manager in due course.

Dougie Imrie stepped down as manager for Raith Rovers. Davies is happy to help in the short-term but has informed club officials that he does not want to be considered for the manager’s job.

The former Nottingham Forest and Derby County chief made a vow to Imrie before he came in that he wouldn’t, under any circumstances, succeed him in the Morton job. He has remained true to his word and informed Morton officials and players of that stance last week.

Davies is happy to remain at the club in his role as Technical Head Coach.

Davies would be keen to go back into management further down the line. The Cappielow hierarchy has already had several applicants and they are going through that process just now.

They have confirmed that Davies will oversee the next three fixtures, along with Head of Youth and Emerging Talent Gary Millar, Goalkeeping Coach Jon Connolly and Academy coach Joe McKee Davies will continue to employ his current role from the stands although he will go into the dugout for Friday night’s game Queen’s Park because Millar is suspended and to comply with the needs for somebody on the bench to have the relevant coaching criteria.

A club statement confirmed: ‘As we look ahead to Friday night’s fixture against Queens Park, the club wishes to provide supporters with an update on our first-team management arrangements for the upcoming games. Billy Davies remains in his position as Technical Head Coach.

‘He is currently overseeing first-team operations, leading the planning and delivery of training sessions throughout the week. He is being supported by Head of Youth and Emerging Talent Gary Millar, Goalkeeping Coach Jon Connolly and Academy Coach Joe McKee.

‘This update comes during an exceptionally busy run of fixtures, with four matches in the space of two weeks. The first of these— was a challenging cup tie away to Peterhead—saw the squad deliver a gritty and determined performance in difficult circumstances, and we extend our thanks to the players, coaching staff and fans for their efforts in helping to secure progression to the next round.

‘Since the departure of Dougie Imrie, the club has received dozens of notes of interest in the managerial position. While we appreciate the strong level of interest, we remain committed to taking the appropriate time with this process, particularly given the quality of staff already in place.

‘Billy will continue to oversee from the stands on match day but will be in the technical area for Friday’s game with Queen’s Park game, due to Gary Millar being unavailable after his weekend red card and the club needs to have a coach with the specific coaching requirements.

‘The current coaching structure will remain for at least the next three fixtures, after which we will provide supporters with a further update.’

Follow Record Sport on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram for all of the up-to-the minute breaking news, video and audio on the SPFL, the Scotland national team and beyond.

Tune in to Hotline Live every Sunday to Thursday and have your say on the biggest issues in Scottish football and listen to Record Sport’s newest podcast, Game On, every Friday for your sporting fix, all in bitesize chunks.

!["Cappielow]("https://www.newsbeep.com/uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/0_Greenock-Morton-FC-v-Dundee-United-Cinch-Championship.jpg")
